Dragon Boating & Team Building
Years 9 and 10 students recently enjoyed an incredible day of dragon boating on the Narrabri West Lake.
Made possible by a NSW Sporting Schools grant secured by PE/English Teacher Mrs Penelope Wallington, the focus of the grant was to introduce students to a new sport that’s inclusive and could accommodate diverse student needs and abilities, while encouraging teamwork, co-operation and communication. Dragon boating fitted the bill perfectly.
Our local Namoi Dragons dragon boating team eagerly came on board and rallied other clubs including; the Outback Dragons, Dubbo, the Colour City Dragons, Orange, and the Bathurst Pan Dragons, Bathurst, to provide a fantastic day of fun, adventure and learning for our students.
Woolworths generously donated fresh fruit, water, sausages and bread for a sausage sizzle which was expertly and generously cooked by the team at the Wilga Hotel and delivered to the waters edge in time for lunch.
Huge thanks to the Namoi Dragons, the Outback Dragons, the Colour City Dragons, the Bathurst Pan Dragons, Woolworths, the Wilga Hotel and the Department of Education for making this fantastic experience possible. Sincere thanks also goes to Ms Wallington for the enormous effort she invested into making this opportunity possible for our students.
Free Courses Popular With Year 12 Students
Last week, some 25 Year 12 students from Wee Waa High School and Narrabri High participated in a series of free courses including; Responsible Service of Alcohol, Safe Food Handling, White Card and Responsible Conduct of Gaming.
This opportunity is part of a larger Shire wide skills development program that has been made possible thanks to the NSW State Government and Narrabri Shire Council’s proactive approach to helping school leavers in our shire develop the skills that will help address our local skills gap, while also ensuring students can quickly gain employment to support their future study plans.
Narrabri Council worked closely with both schools and the Narrabri Industrial Network to understand the needs of students and blended those with the needs of our communities before successfully applying for a significant grant to make the program possible. Other upcoming courses include; white card, first aid and working in confined spaces. Our sincere thanks to the Council for making this opportunity possible and to the Narrabri Industrial Network for coordinating trainers and the schedule.
Young Driver Expo
Recently our Year 11 students travelled to Tamworth to take part in the Young Drivers Expo. The day involved the students being engaged in a range of interactive and informative sessions including:
- Assertiveness Skills in Social Situations
- Cash Scenario
- Braking and Cornering Demonstration
- Mock Court Trial
- Heavy Vehicle (blind spots and road awareness)
- Police Drug and Alcohol Unit
- Police Crash Investigation
- NRMA Insurance
- Transport for NSW Information
- Brain Injury Guest Speaker
- Breaking and Cornering Demonstration
Students really enjoyed their day and took a lot of information and awareness out of course. Their participation counts towards their hours for the Life Ready program and is an important part in the transition from learner driver to provisional license holder.
