Sports Round-Up

Matilda Competes at NSWCHSSA

Congratulations to Year 10 student, Matilda Currey who recently attended the NSWCHSSA Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park. Matilda went into her events with a knee injury, but gave it her best and placed mid pack in the G16 discus out of around 20 competitors. Unfortunately, she tweaked her injury and was unable to finish the G16 400m event.

In addition to athletics, Matilda also recently attended the NSWCHSSA Opens girls touch football tournament in St Mary’s, Sydney as a member of the North West team. The team performed well against four other regions (Western, Sydney North, Sydney South West and Hunter). Congratulations Matilda on representing our school at this major tournament on the NSW sporting schools calendar.

Equestrian Sports Introduced at WWHS

This term, our students had the opportunity to choose Equestrian Sports as their sports choice. After much planning and thanks to a dedicated group of staff and parents, Five students have had a terrific time the last five weeks learning new skills and developing their horsemanship.

Lessons have covered; Polo-cross, dressage, Australia Stock Horse time trials and various other eventing capabilities.

Thank you to our wonderful teachers and support staff for organising and instructing this program for our students! Equestrian Sports will hopefully continue as an opportunity in 2024.

To the parents who brought horses and gear in each week for the riders, thank you! This would not have happened without you.

Olympics Unleashed

Students were treated last week to an inspirational talk by a very inspiring young man, Winter Olympian Nick Timmings.

Nick is touring the North West as part of the Australian Olympics ‘Olympics Unleashed’ program that sees Olympians cover Australia, connecting with students to motivate and inspire our next generation of potential Olympic athletes.

After being spotted in his late teens, Nick trained with absolute dedication in the hope he’d be selected for the Olympics in 2018. But as with all Olympic sports, there’s no room for any margin of error and he missed being selected by just hundredths of a second.

So having missed out, Nick dealt with his fear of failing and pressure from some members of his family to quit and ‘get a real job’ and he kept going and focused on training and being selected for the 2022 Beijing Olympics. After 10 years of training, he achieved his first silver medal and then his dream of being selected for the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Placing an impressive 25th in the world at Beijing, Nick’s goal now is the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy.

Nick assured students that there are no short cuts to success, it’s all about commitment, dedication and staying the course. His message was clear.

1. Follow your dreams because it’s what you really want to do

2. Take every opportunity you see

3. Never give up on life
