School Concert Wrap - A Jungle Adventure

Wow!!!! What a night our school community enjoyed last Thursday for our bi-annual school concert with the 2025 theme being A Jungle Adventure! After months of rehearsal within our music program, while walking back to class when the music was playing to end lunch, in our morning yarning circles and random brain breaks our school community was entertained by music, dancing, singing, acting and even a staff performance. The weather smiled upon us for the evening as a selection of jungle animals and characters launched upon the Ocean Grove Park.

The crowd was nervous and excited in anticipation as the beats dropped and the actors and performers took to the stage. The performance was mindblowing throughout and seamless as classes transitioned on and off the stage while being entertained by our acting crew. There were so many aspects of our music and performing arts program that were able to be celebrated.

Such a show and event takes so much work behind the scenes so we want to thank the following:

  • The staff for their support of the students leading up to the event and on the night
  • The families who supported in making costumes and supporting the set design working bee
  • A special shout out to the Inoue family who spent a whole Sunday afternoon to put together the set
  • Mr Justin Morzinek, Mr Dan Asher and Ange Rogers who did so much work behind the scenes over many months to bring everything together - YOU GUYS ROCK!
  • Most of all the stars of the students - YOU WERE AMAZING!

Enjoy some snaps below and the many memories of concert 2025!

Victorian Garden Awards 2025

We love our garden program and love even more, sharing how fabulous we are to other schools and the community.

Last week we were invited to attend the Victorian School Garden Awards ceremony, held at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Melbourne. Cedar (Kitchen Garden Captain) and Annabelle (Sustainability Captain), Clancey and Lynda headed off nice and early for a fun day in the gardens.

We had entered Surfside in 3 categories and were super excited to come home to 2 awards! The first being 3rd place in the PP5 pot recycling program, where were heloped keep plastic plant pots out of landfill and dropped them to VanLoons for recycling. This is a great iniative that everyone in the community can participate in by simply dropping your used pots in the bins in the VanLoons carpark.

The second award and the most exciting was the Food Cube Prize where we received 4 Foodcube raised wicking beds along with a heap of potting mix that we will install in 2026.

Cant wait for you to see the final project!

Supporting Transition

As we come to the end of the school year, children may be feeling overwhelmed by the many changes that will happen over the next few weeks and into the start of the new year.

In our daily life we all experience change, such as changing activities, or going to different places. Another word to describe change is transition. Transition is a word often used by schools to talk about changes in routine and the ability to stop one activity and start another.

Some people find change and transitions more challenging than others. Transitions may appear more difficult on some days or in some places due to other pressures and expectations. Each young person will cope with transitions and change in a different way. Your child may encounter the following transitions:

  • Change to class routine
  • A different classroom
  • Change to teacher
  • Starting primary school
  • Changing class/grade level
  • Changing schools
  • Leaving primary school for high school

The following ten tips may help to support your child during these times of transition.

  1. Develop a transition plan - A transition plan is a written plan to support changes to routines and/or the environment. It is important to plan for transitions as much as possible to increase success. Transition plans can be brief or highly detailed, depending on the needs of your child and the type of transition you are planning. Well developed transition plans may support your child to successfully manage changes and transitions. Transition plans are best developed in collaboration with your child (if appropriate), and at times the school . Identify a key support person that your child can go to with any questions and ensure the support person knows the plan and the supports required.
  2. Create visual supports - Visual supports provide a visual reference that can be used as often as needed, and can support people on the autism spectrum with skill development, communication and increased independence. They may include real objects, printed images, videos, line drawings and written words. You can create a visual schedule or a weekly timetable for your child. Learn more here
  3. Visit the new classroom or school several times in the school holidays - Doing this before the school term starts will help familiarise your child with the environment without the noise and crowds. On the visit you could point out to your child different spaces they may access and how to use them.
  4. Meet the teacher in advance of the school year starting - You can discuss your child’s strengths and interests, ways to best support them and preferred communication styles. It is important to work in partnership with your child’s school.
  5. Practice traveling to school together - If you have a prefered route to school this is something that when practiced may lesten nervous feelings.
  6. Focus on your child’s strengths and interests.
  7. Highlight what is staying the same - There may be many changes occurring but there will be many things staying the same.
  8. Teach skills to help support a successful transition - This could be well supported by things that already happen within the classroom or school.
  9. Role play - Assist your child in practicing to talk about what they have done in the holidays so they can talk to their friends, print out a few photos from your break to prompt your child if this will help.
  10. Take photos of the new environment - Your child can look back on these images to help familiarise themselves, remember where items are located or identify a quiet space.

Carols in the Park / Glee Club

Our Glee Club will be performing at The Carols in the Park in 2025. We know that this is a fun night for the Ocean Grove community so we hope to see plenty of Surfside families in the crowd singing along. A big thank you to the staff  who have worked with Glee Club this year. This has been an engaging lunchtime based club for our students (and staff) who join together and have fun singing and dancing.

Breakfast Club 2025

Our breakfast club has been in operation all year on a Thursday morning from 7.45am. This Thursday saw our final breakfast club for 2025. A big thank you to Mr Chapman, our parent helpers who have supported the breakfast club crew this year and a massive thank you to the collection of students who are up early and at school at 7.30am to get the day started and allow our students to get together, have a positive start to the day and enjoy some food together. We look forward to continuing with breakfast club in 2026 and hopefully welcome our new crew of helpers.  If there are any parents or carers that are interested in assisting in 2026 please drop into the office and have a chat.
