Literacy

We have been learning words with the “oa” sound, which usually makes the long “o” sound in the middle of words. The children have been practising reading, spelling, and using these words in sentences to help strengthen their phonics skills.

Here are some examples of words we have been learning:

boat, coat, goat, road, soap, toast, float, loaf

Learning these words helps children recognise spelling patterns, improve their reading fluency, and become more confident writers. Families can support this learning at home by practising these words in fun ways, such as reading them in stories, writing them in sand or with crayons, or spotting them in everyday life.

We also learned the suffix “-ing” and practiced reading and writing words that include it. One example sentence we worked with is: “I am peeking at the sleeping puppy.”

Mathematics

In Maths, we are continuing to solve place value problems with reasoning. This means the children are thinking carefully about the value of each digit in a number and explaining their answers. They have been detecting errors in place value diagrams and explaining their reasoning. These activities help build strong number sense and problem-solving skills.

Inquiry

In our unit Our Sustainable World, we explored how vegetable scraps can grow into new plants. Over several weeks, students observed the regrowth process and were excited to see the changes each day. It was a fun and inspiring way to learn about sustainability and the power of reusing food waste.

We have had an amazing year, filled with lots of learning, laughter, and growth. Our Fountain students have developed both academically and socially, and it has been wonderful to watch them form friendships, explore new skills, and begin to engage with the wider school community.

As teachers, we are so proud to usher them into Grade One and celebrate all they have achieved this year. We wish each child the very best for the next stage of their learning journey.

Happy holidays! Enjoy your well-deserved break, and we look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for a new year of learning adventures.
