Grade 6: Celebrating a Year of Growth, Leadership & Memories

What an incredible, and wonderfully lively year it has been in Grade 6! From day one, our students stepped confidently into their final year of primary school, especially once they received their long-awaited Grade 6 jumpers. (We noticed they stood just a little taller after that).

One of the true highlights has been our leadership program. Our students embraced their roles as circle leaders and whole-school assembly helpers with enthusiasm, responsibility, and an impressive ability to make even the youngest students feel supported. Many also took on official leadership positions, demonstrating teamwork, initiative, and a level of professionalism we suspect may disappear the moment they get home and drop their bags on the floor.

Canberra Camp:

Our unforgettable Canberra Camp offered a perfect balance of learning, adventure, and the kind of excitement only a bus full of Grade 6s can create. Students visited Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, Questacon and more, representing our school with pride at every stop, while also discovering the astonishing number of snacks that can fit into a backpack.

Whole school events:

Throughout the year, our students threw themselves into whole-school events with enthusiasm. They shone on stage during Moana Jr., brought plenty of joy (and pyjamas) to PJ Day, crafted colourful masterpieces for the Easter Hat Parade, and embraced the wonder of Book Week with costumes that were creative, clever, and occasionally held together with last-minute tape.

Sport:

Sport was another standout. Students competed with determination and good sportsmanship in Winter and Summer Round Robin, gave their all in Cross Country and Athletics, and showed impressive skill and teamwork during Hooptime. We were incredibly proud to see many of our students advance through district, region, and even state and national levels, achievements that reflect dedication and resilience.

Curriculum learning:

In the classroom, learning has been rich, meaningful and filled with curiosity. Students explored powerful stories in our literature units, strengthened their vocabulary and writing through Word Work, and deepened their understanding of the world in Knowledge Rich. In maths, they tackled challenges with persistence and collaboration—often surprising themselves with just how much they could achieve.

Scrapbooking:

A cherished part of the year was scrapbooking, where students created beautiful keepsakes reflecting their entire primary school journey. These scrapbooks are filled with moments that matter, friendships, milestones, memories, and the occasional glue smudge.

Still to come:

To celebrate their final weeks of primary school, students will enjoy the senior school bike ride, a day at the pool and movies, and a very spirited Grade 6 trivia session. These events bring plenty of laughter and give students a chance to create memories they’ll carry with them into secondary school.

As we look back on this year of leadership, learning, creativity, sport, and community, we are incredibly proud of our Grade 6 students. They have been excellent role models, supportive leaders, and a joy to teach, even on the days when their energy levels seemed scientifically impossible.

We wish them every success as they take on their exciting next chapter in secondary school.

Kind regards,

Mel Adams, Caillin Ibbotson, Michelle Findlay, Lex Fisher & Nathan Hicks
