Learning in Action
📖 Literacy
It has been a fabulous year of learning in Grade 5. This year we completed many Literature units, including War Horse, Waves, Wandering Lonely as a Cloud, Hatchet and The Last Bear. Throughout the units, students deeply explored new vocabulary, the structure of sentences and different text types. From each unit, students produced engaging pieces of writing, using what they had learnt during the unit. Students created narratives, poems and persuasives pieces.
➗ Maths
Throughout the year we deepened our understanding of the Grade 5 content. Through explicit lessons and Daily Reviews, students had hundreds and hundreds of opportunities to retrieve learnt information and show their understanding.
Many units were covered, including:
- Data representation
- Factors and multiples
- Multiplication and division
- Area and perimeter
- Addition and subtraction
- 24-hour time
- Reading timetables
- Decimals
- Fractions
- Percentages
- 2D shapes
- 3D objects
- Probability
- Angles
- Measurement
- Location
To add to this, students regularly practised their fluency through the Maths Masters program. Congratulations to all students who passed their goal or a coloured belt. An extra big congratulations to these students who passed Black Belt and are now Black Belt Masters:
- Blair V
- Lyndon C
- Aekem K
- Elizabeth R
- Austin H
- Pasha M
- Brandon A
Knowledge Rich
Throughout the year, students were engaged and curious with new topics during Knowledge Rich. They delved into the units Natural Disasters and Geographical features, where they learnt about natural disasters that impact Australians and their land. They also explored Understanding Economics and expanded their knowledge about producers, consumers, needs, wants, credit, profits and incentives. This helped prepare them for Market Day and create their own small business.
Special Events
What a huge year of events in Grade 5. Students have participated in:
- Moana Production
- Winter Round Robin
- Anglesea Camp
- Summer Round Robin
- Market Day
- Hooptime
- Gala Rugby Day
- Bike Ed
- Buddies
- Puberty Incursion
- Vietnam Veteran Visit
- Downball Tournament
Thank you for all your support this year. Wishing you all a safe and happy holidays and hopefully we will see you around school in 2026.
