Learning in Action - Recap 2025
📖 Literacy
This year, students embraced the opportunity to explore a range of rich class novels, including Kensuke’s Kingdom, The One and Only Ivan and Hatchet. Through these literature units, students strengthened their text-level writing skills by planning, drafting and publishing a variety of pieces, with a particular focus on persuasive and narrative writing. Students also revised key sentence-level skills and grammar to support the quality of their written work.
Fluency Partner Reading gave students regular opportunities to read engaging texts about our world - such as ocean animals, forests and scientific discoveries - while practising reading aloud with confidence and expression.
Daily Word Work supported students’ spelling development by learning many different base sounds, while deepening their understanding of morphology (the meaningful parts of words) and etymology (the origins of words).
➗ Maths
Throughout the year, students participated in a wide range of maths learning experiences through our Maths Hooks, Maths Masters, Daily Review, Problem Solving, Number and Applied lessons. They consistently embraced challenges and showed a strong willingness to learn new concepts.

🧠 Knowledge-Rich Units
Throughout the year, students developed a rich understanding of the world through our Knowledge Rich curriculum. In geography, they explored different types of maps, identified and used key features, and examined historical maps to compare past and present representations. In our study of celebrations and cultures, students learned about family, religious, and cultural celebrations in Australia, including those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. They also explored the symbols, emblems, and national events, such as Anzac Day, that shape Australian culture.
Students also investigated the natural and social world through units on world mountains, local government, and Vikings. They learned how mountains are formed (evene got crafty and made 3D representations), the animals that live there and how they survive, and how mountains act as barriers and provide benefits to people. In civics, students explored the difference between rules and laws, how laws affect their lives, the structure and role of the Australian government, and the impact of local government on communities.
To finish the year, they studied the history of the Vikings, learning about their way of life, their explorations, the myths they used to make sense of their world, and the stories behind Eric the Red and Greenland.
What a year 2025 has been in Grade 4!
The biggest highlight of the year for many of our students was Camp ADANAC! The students were excited to get away from school for 3 days and have an amazing time at camp. They took on the waterslide, zipline, canoeing, archery and many many more thrilling activities. Students tried new foods, grew a lot of independence and had a fun 3 days with their friends, making many new memories.
Our School Production of Moana was another amazing event! From the many rehearsals at school to performing multiple shows on the day, the production was a jam-packed experience and a great performance by all.
Another highlight was our City Excursion. During our excursion, students visited the Immigration Museum to explore migration history and the connection of Indigenous Australians to the land. They examined objects and personal stories from migrant journeys, sparking discussions about what they would take if they migrated. On Sandridge Bridge, they observed sculptures, flags, and other features representing Melbourne’s migration history. In the afternoon, students boarded Polly Woodside, experiencing life as First Mates through hands-on activities such as scrubbing the deck, steering, and releasing sails.
Students engaged in a wide range of sporting opportunities throughout the year. In our middle school sport sessions on Fridays, they learnt new games like Castles and Giants/Wizards/Elves, and skill development in sports such as t-ball, soccer and netball. They also participated in events and competitions including Cross Country, Athletics, Hoop Time, Swimming, LPS Olympics, and the Downball competition.
What a year it has been! On behalf of the Grade 4 Teaching team, we would like to thank all of the students and families for an amazing year of learning, growth and fun memories! We wish the students all the best with their ventures into the Senior School.
We hope you all enjoy the summer break and have a Merry Christmas!
