Learning Reflection

📖 Literacy

Literacy

This year, students relished the opportunity to read class novels and engage in our literature units. Across the year, we read Matilda, Off We Go Around Australia, Finding Our Heart and The One and Only Ivan. Students built their text level writing skills during these units, by planning, drafting and publishing pieces including persuasives, narratives, explanations and book reports. These units also covered sentence level writing and grammar. Students participated in Fluency Partner Reading, with opportunities to reread the class novels and practise reading aloud.

Daily Word Work supported not only students’ spelling skills but also their understanding of morphology (meaning parts in words) and etymology (where words come from).

🗺️ Knowledge Rich Unit

This year, students have immersed themselves in a range of Knowledge Rich units, where they  explored a range of topics and engaged in deep thinking and knowledge building. The units we covered this year were Celebrations of Different Cultures, Australia and Its Neighbours, Birth of Democracy and Movement of People through History.

Students loved learning about the celebrations that exist across different cultures and sharing their own experiences and celebrations with their peers. They enjoyed viewing maps and locating countries nearby to Australia and around the world. Students were fascinated when developing their knowledge about ancient civilisations and the ways in which people lived. They were intrigued when learning about migration paths in history and the push and pull factors that motivated or forced humans to migrate.

Wellbeing

This year, students continued to learn about friendship through Friendology. They revised and learnt new concepts and skills including the Friend-O-Meter, Friendship Facts and Quick Comebacks. Students regularly referred to Friendology language throughout the year to support them in navigating friendship challenges. Some examples of this language included friendship fires and mean-on-purpose.

In Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships, students developed their understanding of emotional literacy, personal strengths, coping strategies and gender and identity.

Events and Experiences in Grade 3

What a year we have had!

The biggest highlight of the year for many of our students was our Big Day Out Excursion, and what a day it was! Students were overjoyed during our time at Werribee Zoo and the safari bus was a definite favourite! Having a delicious lunch at Grill’d refueled everyone for our adventures at Monopoly Dreams. From a money grab game and a mug shot to a 4D cinema - it had it all!

Our School Production of Moana was another amazing event! From frequent rehearsals at school and the dedication of our choir members to the matinee and evening performances, the production was a jam-packed experience and a memory students will cherish.

Students participated in many sporting opportunities including; Cross Country, Athletics, Hoop Time, Swimming, LPS Olympics and the Downball competition.

We definitely had our fair share of dress up and celebration days and events including; Crazy Sock Day, Harmony Day, Friendship Day, Happy Hat Parade, School Disco, Book Week, PJ Dress Up Day, Sports Colours Day, Cultural Day and the Colour Run.
