Learning Reflection

Thank you for an incredible year in Grade 2! Watching our students grow, learn and support one another has been a joy, and we’re so proud of all they’ve achieved. Thank you for your partnership, your encouragement and the positivity you bring to our community each day. Let's take a look back at the amazing year we have had!

📖 Literacy

Literature:

What an exciting year we’ve had exploring our brand-new subject, Literature Units. This program opened the door to rich, meaningful texts that helped us grow as readers, thinkers and communicators. Students expanded their vocabulary, strengthened their comprehension skills, and engaged in thoughtful discussions where they learned to listen, respond and build on each other’s ideas.

Throughout the year, we explored a wide range of themes, including teamwork and empathy, understanding others, built geography, ANZAC Day, connection to Country, imaginative texts, intertextual connections and friendship. Each unit invited students to make connections, reflect deeply and view stories through different perspectives.

Our comprehension focus was equally rich. Students learned to track character traits, sequence, summarise and retell, and identify symbolism and foreshadowing in stories. They compared texts, explored morals and big questions, practised inferring, and learned to identify a variety of literary devices that authors use to bring stories to life.

Writing

This year in Grade 2 writing has been an exciting adventure filled with creativity and BIG growth! We became sentence experts - spotting statements, questions, commands, and exclamations - and sharpened our editing skills to use clear, accurate punctuation. Our writing grew stronger as we added:

  •  vivid adjectives
  • Adverbs including who, what, when, where, and how
  • conjunctions like becausebutso
  • Subordinating conjunctions such as beforeafterif, and although.
  • Turning fragments into full sentences
  • Common and proper nouns
  • Pronouns
  • possessive pronouns and adjectives
  • Fronted adverbials
  • Present and past tense
  • Modality words.

We also developed our text level writing by drafting and writing single paragraphs with clear topic sentences, supporting details, and conclusions. To finish the year, we explored imaginative narratives and joyful poetry - wonderfully showcasing our young writers’ growth!

Knowledge Rich

This year in our Knowledge Rich program, Grade 2 students have explored a wonderful range of topics that have expanded their understanding of the world and its history. They learned about the cultural significance of Uluru, deepening their appreciation for First Nations histories and connections to Country. In our Growing Colonies unit, students investigated how early settlements developed and the impact these changes had on people and places. Their geographical skills grew as they studied the Geography of Australia, identifying states and Territories, and the diverse environments that make our country unique. Students were captivated by the Great Inventions that have shaped the modern world, discussing how creativity and problem-solving drive progress. We also journeyed back in time to explore Ancient China, discovering its traditions, achievements, and lasting influence. It has been delightful to see students make meaningful connections across these rich and engaging topics.

➗ Maths

This year, our students have made fantastic progress in developing their number knowledge and confidence. They have strengthened their understanding of whole numbers, explored efficient strategies for addition and subtraction, and begun applying multiplication and division to solve a variety of problems. Students have also taken important steps in working with fractions, recognising them as equal parts of a whole. It has been wonderful to see their mathematical thinking grow as they explained their strategies, challenged themselves, and developed a deeper understanding of how numbers work together.

Alongside number concepts, students have engaged in hands-on learning across a range of applied mathematical topics. They measured and compared length and mass, collected and represented data, and used location skills to follow and create simple maps. Through exploring calendars, time, area, volume, and capacity, students learned how mathematics connects to everyday life. They also investigated 2D shapes discovering their properties and how they fit into the world around us. We are incredibly proud of the curiosity, creativity, and persistence students have shown throughout the year as they expanded their mathematical toolkit and applied their learning in meaningful ways.

Students have also been able to show their understanding in mathematics through our other programs such as Maths Masters, maths hooks and daily review.

😊Special Events

As we wrap up our year in Grade 2, we can’t help but look back with huge smiles and full hearts. Our classrooms were filled with learning, laughter, curiosity, and so many unforgettable events. Here’s a look at some of the highlights that made this year truly special:

Incursion and Excursions

Here is a little recap from our excursion in Term 3.

This excursion connected to our Connection to Country unit, that we did as one of our literature units in Term 2. We explored Aboriginal culture and history with our guides. We learned about traditional tools like the boomerang and Mulla Mulla, felt soft possum fur, and watched how fire was made using sticks and a coolamon. In our class groups, we created handprint art using natural ochre paint and learned to paint Aboriginal symbols. We also made bush tea from lemon myrtle leaves, which some of us were brave enough to try!

Here is a little recap from an incursion a few weeks ago.

As part of our Ancient China Knowledge Rich unit, the students participated in our virtual reality incursion. The students embarked on an exciting cultural journey as they travelled (virtually) along the Great Wall of China and uncovered the history of the Silk Road. They learnt about the Terracotta Army, and enjoyed a visit to a traditional shadow-puppet theatre to explore the Chinese Zodiac and discover the traits linked to their own birth year. The students ended the incursion by learning about the traditions, symbols and cultural significance of Chinese New Year.
