Special Events from Grade 1
Healesville Sanctuary Incursion
In Term 2, we visited Healesville Sanctuary as a real world experience connected to our Animals and Habitats unit. It was very exciting as it was our first excursion in Grade 1 students, when we headed to Healesville Sanctuary. Students had the opportunity to observe animals in their habitats and connect their learning to the real world. The excursion involved an educational workshop where students explored the sanctuary and attended the 'Spirits of the Sky' show.
Grade 1 Sustainability Day
Students in Grade 1 participated in a day dedicated to sustainability as part of their Taking Care of the Earth Knowledge Rich topic. As part of this day, students participated in an incursion that encouraged them to think about more than just their home environment and to take a look at how their actions fit in with their suburb, city, country and planet. Throughout the day students created a rubbish timeline, practised sorting rubbish into the correct bins, decorated a tote bag for a sustainable shopping option, planted a seedling to take home and completed a reflection activity.
Scienceworks Excursion
During Term 4, the Grade 1 students went on an exciting excursion to Scienceworks as part of our Astronomy learning in Knowledge Rich. The students started their day by playing on the big playground before heading into the planetarium. Inside, the students got to lay down in special reclining seats and watched an amazing movie on the ceiling about a dog named Tycho who travelled to Mars. They also explored different star constellations, which was a highlight for many students.
Lastly, the students visited Sportsworks, where everyone took part in lots of fun, hands-on activities. Students raced Cathy Freeman, measured how high they could jump, and explored different physical challenges. After this, we spent time in the science room discovering the levels of gravity on each planet and learning about interesting objects and inventions from the past.
