Mr Derek Lennon
Last weekend was the midpoint of the winter season as we competed against St Laurence’s College on their Old Boys Day. On a wonderful day for schoolboy sport, Marist enjoyed good results across the sports.
The weekend started on Friday night where our 1st IV chess team travelled to South Brisbane. In a gallant showing, our boys went down 10 to 6. Overall, we had 3 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses against Lauries. In football the 1st XI had a terrific 3-nil win at Runcorn. This sees us remain undefeated, with all to play for with Padua and St Patrick’s also undefeated. Padua are 2 points in front of us and Pats are 2 points behind. Overall we had 12 wins, 5 draws and 20 losses. In rugby the 1st XV had a great win 52-21, with strong performances across the team. They remain undefeated with three rounds to go. Overall, we won 22 and lost 9 matches.
This weekend we will be facing St Edmund’s College in our annual Super Saturday event. There will be lots of entertainment and activities around the grounds on the day. This is the day you play- you stay. The 1st XI are playing at 11:30am on Cameron and the 1st XV on McMahon at 3:15pm.
In a busy week in sport, our cross country boys are approaching the business end of their season. This week we have had the Met North trials, the final AIC lead up meet at Runcorn and our opens team are being presented with their singlets at the College assembly. We wish all our runners the very best as they prepare for this iconic championship event next Wednesday 28th at Shorncliffe.
We have seen a rise of boys cutting their socks at the ankles and wearing white socks underneath. This is not a part of the College unform and must stop. Any players who have cut their socks are to purchase a new pair before this weekend’s fixtures.
School sport provides us with a wonderful opportunity for boys to play sports, try new activities, represent the college and play with their mates. It is a safe, inclusive environment for all and a positive experience for players, coaches and staff and spectators. I take this opportunity to remind our whole college community that we have an obligation to play our part in this when we are on school grounds spectating.
When we are watching our boys sport, as coaches and supporters, we must be setting the best example possible for the boys. That includes accepting any umpire decision, regardless of whether we felt it was correct or not, respecting and encouraging all players on the field, and being always gracious in victory or defeat. It is up to all of to make sure school sport remains the safe and inclusive experience it has traditionally been.
The AIC has a policy of no dogs on site at any of the venues. Please support this and leave your pets at home. There are a lot of people and lots of noise, motion and excitement to stir up even the most placid of dogs from time to time. This includes Des Connor Park where space on the sidelines is at a premium.
We have reached that point in the term when assignments kick in, exams are on the horizon and next term’s sports are starting to send out information about trials and opportunities next term. There is a lot to distract us from the commitment we have in front of, the sport we are currently playing. Please make sure current sports, football, rugby cross country and chess remain our priority right through to the end of the season.
My experience in boys education tells me that boys do better when maintaining a regular routine, this includes in exam times. Boys thrive on familiarity and consistency with their schedules and so training for teams will continue through to the end of the season for all teams. Where any individual feels they would benefit from missing training in the morning because they have an exam first up, we support this but please make sure you communicate with your coach and year co-ordinator in advance.

Marist Rugby Union | Round 4 vs St Laurence’s College
Thank you to everyone who came out to support Round 4 of the AIC Rugby season.
The round kicked off on Friday afternoon with a local grudge match between the Marist 7th XV and 9th XV. In what was a skilful and hard-fought contest, both teams displayed an unwavering commitment to get their team across the line. Congratulations to the 7th XV, who eventually claimed a 26-17 victory.
Special mention to James Maguire (7th XV) and Llewellyn Carrigan (9th XV), who were named Players of the Match for their dominant performances in the front row.
Thank you to all the students involved for their positive approach to the game and for their continued support across Saturday’s fixtures, which were played at three different venues. Your efforts reflect the genuine strength of our rugby community.
Following a wonderful week of sunshine, Saturday delivered a glorious day of blue skies and perfect conditions for running rugby.
Marist College travelled to Runcorn to take on St Laurence’s College, a traditional rival with a proud rugby history. Celebrating their 110-year anniversary, SLC hosted a large and vocal crowd, creating a fantastic atmosphere for a long and entertaining day of schoolboy rugby.
In total, 18 of Marist’s 36 teams took the field at Runcorn, whilst the remaining teams played at Marist or other venues across the city.
The 1st XV continued their undefeated run in what was a very physical and highly entertaining match. With two sides playing contrasting styles of rugby, Marist eventually proved too strong, securing a 52–21 victory. The 2nd XV, however, suffered their first loss of the season. Slightly off the pace, particularly around the contact areas, the team will look to regroup with three important rounds still to play. The challenge to keep improving remains ahead. The 3rd XV came away with a hard-fought win in a back-and-forth contest, showing clear evidence of training efforts transferring into game-day performance. The 4th XV and 6th XV recorded strong victories over Villanova, while the 5th XV proved too strong for Padua College. A special mention to the 8th XV, who set the tone early in the day with a dominant win over the SLC 6th XV at Runcorn. Congratulations to all Opens teams and coaches for their continued good work.
Well done to the 10A and 10B teams who continue to impress with strong defensive efforts and excellent Marist catch-pass execution under pressure. All Year 10 teams have shown great progress throughout the season and will need to stay united and resilient, with a few injuries across the squads set to test their depth in the coming weeks.
In the Year 9 cohort, it was a mixed day of results for the Marist teams. The 9A team were edged out in a physical and tightly contested match. Despite creating several opportunities to close out the game, moments of ill-discipline and inconsistent decision-making ultimately put them under pressure. The 9B team produced a strong performance, playing some superb running rugby and showcasing excellent skills to overcome SLC. The 9C and 9D teams continued to compete with strong intent and are showing encouraging signs of ongoing development each week.
The Year 8 teams recorded three wins and two losses in a tightly contested round of rugby across the board. The 8A team faced a size mismatch, which proved difficult to overcome. cCongratulations to St Laurence’s for their strong performance. The remainder of the age group featured some fantastic contests against SLC, Padua, and Iona. Well done to all the students for their effort and resilience in navigating a challenging day of rugby.
The Year 7 teams had a split outcome in Round 4. The 7A team went down in a nail-biter, 14-7, in a match that kicked off at 7:30am as the sun was rising. Both teams truly were dew sweepers!. The 7B team produced some wonderful rugby, running out 26-7 winners with a balanced display of skill and structure. The 7C and 7D teams faced off in a grudge match for the ages, delivering outstanding end-to-end rugby that showcased effort, flair, and determination. Congratulations to all players for the quality of rugby on display and the spirit in which it was played.
Overall, Saturday at Runcorn was a day that celebrated everything great about school rugby including longstanding traditions, fierce yet friendly rivalries, physical attacking rugby, strong connections across our program, and a shared commitment to ensuring every student has the opportunity to play 50 minutes of rugby.
A sincere thank you to our year level coordinators for their ongoing efforts in working with coaches to select teams and create opportunities, to our coaches for their outstanding guidance and care throughout the first half of the AIC competition, and to our supporters for helping deliver another memorable day of rugby at the College.
We now turn our attention to Round 5, Super Saturday, with plenty to be proud of and a lot to look forward to.

Representative Tennis
Northwest representative trials were held on Monday 26th May at the Ferny Grove tennis Centre in which our 8 boys selected to try their luck. They did themselves, their parents and the school proud.
Every boy played well with 36 boys vying for just four team spots and 2 reserve spots. Our school with a strong representation of players getting to play some great tennis which really entertained the crowds watching.
After the first round of round robin matches with only the top two players of 6 groups, we had 5 qualify for the second stage.
Our eight players consisting of Harrison Fowler, Rhys Adams, Sam Brown, Ted Jorgenson, Chase Richardson, Leo Scuderi, Gus Scuderi and Jack James.
Five made it through to the second stage—an incredible achievement. Chase Richardson went undefeated through all stages, taking out the final in dominant style. He now qualifies for the Met North team!
Leo Scuderi also impressed, narrowly missing wins in a couple of tight matches, and has earned selection alongside Chase.
One player though really played his heart out and narrowly lost some really close matches was Harrison Fowler. Great effort you should be proud.
To all the boys—win or lose, you represented the College with pride and sportsmanship. You’re role models for our community.
Thank you to all the parents who gave up their time to bring their child along and watch them apply their shills in our great sport.

Round Four vs St Laurence’s College
Round Four saw the Marist boys take on a strong St Laurence’s College Football program down at Runcorn on their Old Boys Day. It was a tough day for many of our teams but really encouraging to see our boys playing with a smile on their face and giving 110% throughout the day. There were many closely contested games played at a high level that pushed our teams to reach new levels. The highlight of the day was a convincing 3-0 win for the 1st XI side as goals from captain James Woolaston, Giacomo Calabrese and Jimmy Garden kept the boys premiership aspirations alive.
Congratulations to the following teams who remain undefeated after four competitive rounds of Football: 1st XI; 5th XI; 6th XI; 10B; 10C; 8A; 7D; 6A; 6C Blue; 6C Gold; 6D; 6 Violet; 5B.
