Year 1/2 Community
The Year 1/2s have been super busy this term across a range of learning areas!
In their Inquiry Unit: Seed to Snack! Where Does Our Food Come From, the children have been exploring where our food comes from. They have discovered that food can come from plants and animals from the land or sea.
One big initiative this term has been their community garden. When discussing that a lot of the food we eat in our everyday lunchbox comes from plants, we thought it would be great to plant some seedlings and watch them grow throughout the term, in the hope that by the end of the term, we would have some delicious veggies and herbs!
They have planted broccoli, lettuce, carrots, spinach, leek, rosemary, chives and parsely.
It has been up to the children to look after the garden. They have taken immense pride in watering it each afternoon and it has been lovely to hear their excitement when they think their seedlings have grown a little more!
Check them out below!
Not only are the children growing veggies, we also discussed where dairy products come from. The students discovered how easy it is to make butter from scratch!
Using a bit of elbow grease (and an electric mixer!) we whipped and whipped some cream for around 25 minutes, until we noticed hard lumps forming! Those hard lumps were fresh butter. We separated the lumps from the buttermilk and squeezed it to form a large ball of butter. We discussed what we use butter for and discovered we use it a lot more than we thought! Whether it be in our sandwiches, baking or on our breakfast, it was a staple we all were familiar with!
Have a look at the process below!
We then thought after all our hard work we had to enjoy our butter on some delicious fairy bread. Yum!
Bricks that make the Year 1/2 Community strong!
In Wellbeing, the children discussed different ways to 'build each other up.' It was wonderful to hear all the wonderful things they enjoy doing for each other in order to make their peers feel happy and safe at school.
Some of the ideas were:
being kind
being loving
including everyone
cheering people up
be funny
be nice
help your friends
make people laugh
take care of each other
We have made a mindful effort to call out the good behaviours we see and celebrate them.
We have built a wall of bricks in our classroom that is made up of all the behaviours we love to see in our school community. We look to them as a reminder of how we all want to be treated and how we can treat the people around us.
