Year 9 Electives - Mathematics

Mathemagical Worlds

Course Description:

Discover the fascinating and unexpected side of mathematics in this hands-on, curiosity-driven elective. Mathemagical Worlds is a course designed for students who enjoy puzzles, creative thinking, and exploring the "why" behind the numbers. Across five engaging topics—Mathemagics, Graph Theory, Famous Numbers, Multiple Dimensions, and Infinity—students will explore everything from card tricks based on mathematical patterns, to the secrets of the Fibonacci sequence, to the mind-bending world of 4D shapes and fractals.

You’ll learn how perfect shuffles can bring order from chaos, why Euler couldn’t cross all the bridges of Königsberg, and how mathematical formulas can draw pictures—including one that literally graphs itself. You’ll investigate the golden ratio in nature, experiment with Möbius strips and build geometric origami.

This is not your typical maths class. It’s an opportunity to see mathematics as an art, a science, and a language for understanding the world. Whether you’re a budding mathematician, a curious problem solver, or just want to experience how fun and creative maths can be—this course will change the way you think about numbers forever.
