Level 3

Reading
The Level 3 students have been expanding their reading strategies to analyse any text they read by visualising, predicting, connecting and also summarising and questioning. Students have continued to draw on their knowledge 'schema', text structures and language features to build literal (stated in the text / reading on the lines) and inferred (implied or suggested / reading between the lines) meanings. It has been great to see their growth in being able to produce a succinct summary following the someone, did, but, so, then structure and making logical inferences using text clues.
Writing
Over the next few weeks, we will be focusing on the structure and features of Information Reports and making sure to write interesting topic paragraphs using relevant and specific topic information. Last week, small groups of students interviewed one lucky member and made dot point notes during the process. This week we will be using our notes to write an information report using subheadings, topic sentences, interesting information and a concluding statement for each paragraph. Here are our interview note-taking sheets:
Numeracy
The last two weeks we have focused on applying efficient mental strategies when working with addition and subtraction problems. We have been finding missing numbers in a number sentence like 62 + ? = 80 and using our knowledge of addition and subtraction being inverse operations, to rearrange and work out 80 - 62 = ?
Our focus has also included worded problems and locating the important information that is needed to help solve it. Here is an example to try yourself!
There is a shop that sells vehicles. I’ve heard that there are 86 wheels in total in the shop. What types and how many of each vehicle could be in the shop?
We were lucky enough to enjoy a fabulous Love Maths Numeracy Day last Tuesday, where the whole school played lots of number games and 'Esti-Mystery' guesstimation activities which were very exciting!
3MW laughed all the way through one game we played called "100 Laughs". Our tables were full of organised chaos - playing cards, game boards and score sheets. Every time a student made a number sentence add to 100, they had to laugh out loud!
Also during Numeracy Day, students divided into their Connect Groups and explored tessellations. There was a range of tessellated patterns made during the session as each Connect Group chose a different way to explore and present their tessellation talents. Here are a few snaps from the day!
Inquiry
Citizenship, Diversity and Identity Justice
Through our inquiry lens this term, students have begun to explore how wrong actions can sometimes lead to good outcomes and the reverse. During one session this week, students were introduced to the "Right, Wrong and In Between" thinking routine. This offered the students a way to understand the role of personal values and dispositions in ethical decision-making and actions. Using a real-life scenario, students engaged in rich round table discussions and a range of interesting answers and thoughts are presented below.
