Supporting Every Learner at Lysterfield
At Lysterfield Primary, our commitment to student wellbeing and learning extends beyond the classroom. Last week, our dedicated Educational Support Staff participated in professional learning focused on supporting students with diverse needs. This valuable session explored how to identify underlying student needs, de-escalate challenging situations effectively, and use proactive strategies to create a calm, supportive learning environment.
Together, the team reflected on several key practices that are essential for fostering positive student outcomes:
- Begin each day or session with a fresh perspective
- Approach all interactions with empathy
- Use praise generously to reinforce positive behaviours
- Create consistent routines that build a sense of safety
- Check in with students about how they're feeling
- Break tasks and situations down into small, manageable steps
- Prioritise relationship-building with every student
This learning aligns closely with our whole-school approach to Explicit Teaching and Behaviour Routines. At Lysterfield, we understand that all learners benefit from clear, structured teaching, but this approach is particularly powerful for neurodiverse students, such as those with ADHD, autism, or learning difficulties.
When expectations are clear and consistent, and students receive continuous feedback and support, they are free to focus on their learning without the added challenge of having to interpret hidden cues or guess what’s expected. Predictability, repetition, and multisensory teaching methods help build both confidence and independence.
We’re proud of the way our team continues to grow in their understanding and practice to ensure every student feels safe, supported, and ready to learn.
