English & Literacy

Term Three has been very busy for the English and Literacy Faculties. Most notably, Week 5 marked the 80th National Book Week, where Yarrabing Secondary College staff and students celebrated the theme, ‘Book an Adventure.’ Students engaged in a number of activities during lunchtimes, and during their English and Literacy classes, including:

  • A short story class battle where students create an adventure for their target readers - the winner is yet to be determined;

  • Bookmark marking, including origami bookmarks. Many bookmarks allowed students to do some colouring for mindfulness;

  • Origami book making

  • A front cover redesign competition led by Student Voice - Year 7s redesigned The Secret Library of Hummingbird House; Year 8s redesigned The Giver. Student Voice representatives from each Homegroup voted, and the winning design was from Trishney Erika Falevalu Utumapu (7E). Well done!

  • A Staff Favourites competition, where students and staff used clues in C Block to guess the favourite novels of staff members. Students were also able to learn about why staff at Yarrabing enjoy reading, particularly as a way to disassociate from work and their busy schedules.

Staff also dressed up as their favourite genre or novel to get in the spirit. It was lovely to see the variety of costumes on the day!

Year 7 English

Students have enjoyed unpacking Julianne Negri’s novel, The Secret Library of Hummingbird House. During Student Success in Week 6, students partook in a ‘Nonesuch Trivia’ within their Homegroups, where students were quizzed about the text. It was great to see a lot of students get involved!

We very much look forward to when she can visit the College to run a creative-writing workshop with the students. Her incursion was delayed due to illness.

Year 8 English

Students have been refining their analytical writing skills as they have delved deep into Lois Lowry’s, The Giver. It has been exciting to read several paragraphs that explore Lowry’s experiences throughout the Cold War in American Society throughout their analyses, as well as explorations of Lowry’s views, values and beliefs. The Year 8 cohort is to be commended for their rigorous efforts this term!
