Year 8 Coordinators

Our Year 8 students embraced a busy and enriching start to Term 3. With a strong focus on academics, students settled back into their routines, revisited key study habits, and engaged with some new electives and timetable changes. This term promised heaps of opportunities beyond the classroom. Students participated in Book Week celebrations, explored Science Week activities, and began training for upcoming interschool sports competitions and the Humanities Medieval Day . Our focus on development continued through our Student Success program, where students explored careers and developed essential study skills to set themselves up for future success.
A highlight for our Year 8 students’ program was the chance to work with Courage to Care volunteers. This inspiring program shared real stories from people who had faced significant challenges, including survivors of war. Students explored important themes, such as:
The dangers of discrimination and hate
How everyday people made a difference by standing up for others
How to be an Upstander, not a bystander
Our Year 8 Leadership Camp in Term 4 is also approaching. The Year Level Coordinator's have began planning for this event and will communicate with selected students and families. Applications and interviews for student leaders took place, and the team was impressed by the students’ commitment, motivation, and eagerness to take on key leadership roles. Term 3 shaped up to be a dynamic and meaningful term, full of learning, growth, and exciting opportunities for our students.
Personal Hygiene in Focus by Cynthia Flores
During this term’s week two, every Year 8 class was visited by the new Health Promotion Nurse. The Year 8 students went through a multi- choice quiz that tested their theoretical as well as practical knowledge on how to maintain good personal hygiene. They answered seemingly very simple questions but were challenged when asked about the rationale. Queries like ‘why do we brush our teeth in the morning and before going to bed?’ or ‘why do we use a fresh towel after taking a shower?’ certainly elicited lively discussions.
Cynthia Flores, is currently the Secondary School (Health Promotion) Nurse for Yarrabing Secondary College. Her 15+ years of nursing background includes child (under 5yo) health, public health and adolescent health.
