Building a Positive School Culture Through SWPBS
At Keysborough College, we are committed to creating a school environment where all students feel safe, valued, and supported to achieve their best. Our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) team has been working to lay the foundations for a more consistent and positive culture across our college. Central to this work is a shared belief: We believe that Keysborough College should have a safe and inclusive culture that supports students to build their independence, achieve success and realise their purpose.
The SWPBS framework is designed to strengthen this vision by providing a clear and unified structure that is shaped through the voices of students, their families and our staff. By listening to all members of our learning community, we gain insight into what is working well and where we can grow. This reflective process helps us capitalise on our strengths and turn challenges into opportunities through progressive and achievable steps.
At the heart of our approach are the school values of Respect, Excellence, and Diversity. These values guide our decisions and interactions, and underpin the positive culture we are striving to build. We want every student to thrive – not just academically, but socially and emotionally.
A key part of this work has involved staff working together to identify behaviours we want to help students avoid. These behaviours are being defined clearly so that we can consistently teach and model the kinds of conduct we believe reflect the values of a Keysborough student. By doing so, we are not only outlining expectations but also supporting students to understand the reasons behind them.
Ultimately, SWPBS is about creating a learning environment where positive behaviour is recognised, celebrated and reinforced – a place where every student has the opportunity to grow with confidence, respect others, strive for excellence, and be proud of who they are.
