The Fathering Project News

Step Up For Kids

Right now, half a million children in Australia aged 4 to 14 are experiencing mental health challenges - and many aren't getting the support they need.

The presence of a caring, engaged father or father figure can make a world of difference. It builds a child’s sense of safety, confidence, and emotional strength.

That’s why this Father's Day weekend, 6–7 September 2025, The Fathering Project are inviting all fathers to do something truly meaningful for the next generation.

Step Up For Kids is a new national movement to support children’s mental health and wellbeing. It’s a chance for families, friends, schools, workplaces and communities to come together, get moving, and help shine a light on the vital role fathers and father-figures play in a child’s emotional world.

Whether you’re walking with the kids, rallying your mates, joining your local dads' group, or getting your workplace involved - it’s all about coming together for a cause that matters.

Every step you take helps raise awareness of a father's role in building children’s resilience, self-worth and sense of belonging. Your involvement supports The Fathering Project’s work in helping kids feel seen, safe and supported.

Who can take part?

This is for everyone. Whether you’re a dad, mum, grandparent, carer or mate - if you care about kids, you’re invited. Whether you walk or run one kilometre or ten, fast or slow, on a beach, trail or your street, you’ll be stepping into something meaningful. Bring the kids. Walk solo. Rally a team. However you do it, you’ll be making a difference.

How it works

  1. Sign up online - it only takes a minute.
  2. Move your way - join a local event or go your own way.
  3. Make an impact - use your walk to start conversations and raise awareness.
  4. Celebrate Father’s Day weekend - knowing you’ve stepped up for kids’ mental health.
