NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC stands for ‘National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Day Observance Committee’.

NAIDOC Week is coming up in the school holidays from 6th-13th of July. It is a celebration that is held every year and lasts for one week. This is when we celebrate the culture, history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Why is NAIDOC Week special?

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture should be celebrated, respected and acknowledged.

It also shows that Australians from all cultures can live together peacefully and celebrate the heritage of Australia.

Celebrate NAIDOC Week at Home!As NAIDOC Week falls during the school holidays, here are some fun and meaningful ways you can celebrate at home:

  • Head outside and create your own animal tracks in the sandpit—just like the ones seen in nature.
  • Plant an Indigenous seed in a pot. When it begins to grow, you can transfer it to your garden as a lasting symbol of NAIDOC Week.
  • Get creative with a sports guernsey design that tells your story so far or something exciting that lies ahead. Share your design with friends during Rounds Ten and Eleven of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season!
  • Tap into your artistic side by making a star constellation. Use black paper, star stickers, metallic markers, or even poke tiny holes to let the light shine through. You can recreate constellations from Indigenous astronomy—or invent your own!
  • Find a quiet, comfy spot and read or listen to a Creation or Dreamtime story. There are so many wonderful tales to explore.

Wishing you a creative and reflective NAIDOC Week!
