Term 2, Week 10
After our busy Term 1 preparing for our Chinese Day Art Exhibition, it was wonderful to start Term 2 with an excited and enthusiastic group of young Artists at BPS. This positive creativity has continued throughout the term. Hooray for BPS Artists!
Pop Art and Op Art
This term in Grades 3 to 6 we have been focusing on the Work of modern Artists of the Pop and Op era.
Students have been studying the Artwork of two famous Artists who changed the direction of modern Art: Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
Andy Warhol’s Artwork inspired our young Artists to think about making Art about popular images, using grid systems, heightened strong and neon colours and using complimentary colours to create bold contrasts. Students have learnt how to present their artwork in contrasting colours to create visual impact.
Senior students have focused on the graphic work of Roy Lichtenstein to inspire bold designs in vibrant colours for folio designs. Bold and graphic lines, working with type styles of the period and simple colours have generated strong designs with eye-catching focal points.
Look out Design world, we have some up and coming Graphic designers in our midst!
Along our journey of discovering our Op and Pop Art we have learnt about: Art Auctions, Art Collector’s, Who and what a Philanthropist is in the Art World. We have held mock auctions and shock auctions as the prices soar! It is exciting to see how enthusiastically students embrace learning about Artworks and Art styles from around the world.
In the Junior grades this Term the Units we have been studying in Art include the following:
The ART Elements
All levels of the school have been having a focus on the six Art Elements: Colour, Line, Shape, Texture, Form and Space. These elements occur in Art. They are the ‘Building Blocks’ of our Artwork and help us to understand how to create in a way that enables us to share and visualise our ideas.
Grade Three and Four students’ have extended their knowledge and drawing practice while working with focal points, optical illusions, repeated lines, type styles and fonts used in artworks and Design. Their folio focus has been on the designs of the sixties and seventies, flower power, block typefaces and tear drop or bubble type. Students have explored the symbols, images and linework, along with pastel colours of the flower power era.
They have learnt about creating textured leaf rubbings, colour contrasts and 3D illusions created in two-dimensional artwork.
Junior students have focused on the season of Autumn, of colours, shapes, and textures. They have learnt Type and telling a story with Type styles and illustrations interwoven.
Painting and Drawing
In the Junior grades students have had A BIG learning focus on Colour – Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Complimentary colours, Tints, and shades using water-colours, acrylic paints, pastels and pencils, collage, and mixed media on a range of different activities.
In Autumn we looked at Warm colours of yellows, oranges, reds, pinks, purples, and warm browns.
In Winter, the students have learnt about self-portraits and surrounding ourselves with warm colours along with creating works of Art that focus on the cool colours of the Colour wheel: blues, greens, cool purples and then greys.
