Grade 1 & 2
Term 2, Week 10
What a fantastically brilliant semester! It has been an absolute pleasure enjoying this past term of school. We have had fantastic learning experiences, made new friends, and continued to show why the Grade 1 and Grade 2 classrooms are the places to be.
Our inquiry unit ‘How Are We Connected?’ saw us investigating Australia, both locally and nationally. We have learnt about the suburbs we live in, some features of our state of Victoria, and the amazing places we can visit around Australia. Our excursion to Blackburn Lake was definitely a highlight as we explored the similarities and differences between the past and present.
Our Literacy program has seen us combine the Heggerty’s Phonemic Awareness lessons with our very own Phonics tasks. Every morning, we explore the different sounds that letters can make, either individually or jointly, as well as some new and interesting prefixes and suffixes. We have incorporated this new knowledge in our reading and writing as we explored nonfiction texts and information reports. We have had a tremendous time reading about the Australian states and territories and writing about places such as Uluru.
In Maths, we created interesting questions to ask our peers and collect data on various topics. Did you know you could represent data in multiple ways? We have used tally marks, pictographs, and even bar and pie charts to represent all the data we have collected! We have had a lot of fun measuring the length and heights of different objects as well. Apparently Mr Ringin is nineteen popsicle sticks tall! Maybe we can measure our parents over the school holidays! We are wrapping up the term by learning about directions and creating maps, and how to read analogue clocks.
