Why Reducing Screen Time Matters

In today’s digital world, screens are a big part of our children’s lives—at school and at home. While technology offers great learning opportunities, too much screen time can have negative effects on children’s wellbeing, focus and development.

Research shows that reducing recreational screen time helps children:

  • Improve focus and attention – Children who spend less time on screens are better able to concentrate and engage deeply in learning.
  • Develop social and emotional skills – More face-to-face play and interaction builds empathy, communication skills and confidence.
  • Get better sleep – Reducing screens, especially before bed, supports healthier sleep routines.
  • Be more active – Limiting screen time encourages children to move, explore and play, which supports both physical and mental health.

At school, we encourage students to find a healthy balance between digital and non-digital activities. Families can support this at home by setting simple routines—like device-free meal times, outdoor play after school, or keeping screens out of bedrooms.

Together, we can help children build positive habits and enjoy all the benefits of learning, play and connection beyond the screen.
