This week we welcomed France Dot, a talented and imaginative children’s author, for a special literacy incursion. France generously met with our Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 students to share her experiences as a writer of fictional stories for young readers. Her visit offered students a fascinating insight into how she creates engaging characters, thrilling adventures, and magical worlds that spark creativity and imagination.

During the session, France spoke about her journey as an author and provided a captivating overview of her book. She shared how her story ideas were formed, explained her planning process, and guided students through the steps involved in developing a sequence of events. France also discussed her writing routine, how the story came together, and emphasised the importance of editing, editing, editing!

Students were inspired to learn about her decision to illustrate the book herself, as well as the creative choices behind the illustrations and overall book design. A highlight of the incursion was hearing France read an excerpt from her book and exploring her illustration display up close. The session concluded with a thoughtful Q&A, where students asked insightful questions about writing and storytelling.

This enriching experience encouraged students to think like authors, explore their imaginations, and appreciate the craft behind bringing a story to life.

Blurb

“It all started with a message in a bottle - a desperate plea for help - but how can a team of four kids unravel the clues to find the kidnapped man? And now they are dangerously close to being discovered! Tommy knows they would be in BIG trouble if his mum knew what they’d done –sneaking out at night was bad enough, but coming face to face with a kidnapper on a deserted beach? She would go NUTS!!! SKIT must succeed!
