Author visit - Year 5
Our Year 5 students were treated to a very special visit today from Amelia Mellor, author of The Grandest Bookshop in the World. Throughout the term, the students have been deeply engaged in the novel as part of their Literacy unit, exploring the concept of 'Magic Realism', unpacking rich vocabulary and sentence structures, and using the text as inspiration for their own writing.
Meeting Amelia in person offered a wonderful opportunity to hear about her journey as a successful author, learn about her writing process, and ask thoughtful questions about character development, themes and plotlines. Our students were captivated, and the visit added an exciting layer of real-world connection to their learning.
We would like to warmly thank Beris Campbell (grandmother of Rosa and Becky) for facilitating this visit. Beris is the great-grandaughter the real-life inspiration behind the novel, Cole’s Book Arcade. This iconic Melbourne institution, founded by Edward William Cole in the late 19th century, was famous for its atmosphere of wonder, creativity and curiosity. Cole’s passion for books, imagination and education makes his legacy a fascinating part of Melbourne’s cultural history and a perfect backdrop for this term’s learning.
What an inspiring experience for our young readers and writers! A huge thank you to Beris for organising the visit and to Amelia for coming into the school to speak for free.
Gymnastics Program Launches for Foundation – Year 4
We are excited to share that our Gymnastics Program kicked off this week for students in Foundation through to Year 4. Over the next six weeks, each class will participate in a weekly session led by the qualified and energetic coaches from Glitz Gymnastics Academy.
We have been fortunate to enjoy some beautiful sunny weather, allowing the coaches to set up an impressive range of equipment out on the basketball court. Students have loved jumping, balancing, rolling, climbing and stretching their way through the first sessions - a fantastic way to build strength, flexibility, confidence and coordination while staying active.
It has been wonderful to see so many smiling faces and enthusiastic efforts already. We look forward to watching students continue to develop their gymnastics skills over the coming weeks!
Planning for 2026
We are well into the process of planning for next year, creating classes, employing staff and setting budgets for a successful 2026.
As our budget is determined by enrolment numbers, it is vital that we get an accurate picture of how many students we will have at SKiPPS at the start of next year.
If your Foundation - Year 5 child is going to be elsewhere next year, we would appreciate you letting us know as soon as possible.
