With the arrival of spring the 5/6s have been busy preparing the garden. We have been moving soil and filling up the planter boxes ready for new planting. We have also been busy tidying up the space and getting ready for the Arts Festival.

Recently you might have heard about or even attended Chess Club. Every Thursday at lunch time in James’ Room. Alan is the brainchild and founder of Chess Club
An initial persuasive letter to David, a proposal for the club and a desire to share his knowledge and passion for the game was enough to get Chess Club off the ground. What started with humble beginnings, a few curious students and Alan, has now boomed into a room full of chess enthusiasts with more than 20 people attending their last meet.

We were lucky enough to ask Alan some questions as he wandered between games, tutoring some up-and-coming chess stars.
Alan, what was your motivation to start Chess Club?
Well… First of all, I love playing chess. I’ve heard of other chess clubs at other schools and wanted to start a chess club of my own. My dad also encouraged me to start one.
When did you start playing chess?
I played chess 4 years ago for the first time, but I only became motivated 2 years ago.
What is your favourite opening move?
The Italian game - because I’ve studied it. It's simple and there are many ways the game can turn out.
Have you been beaten by any of your students?
In the chess club… not yet.
What is your favourite thing about Chess Club?
I asked nearly everyone why they like chess club… nobody said for the pins or glory or to escape the heat … They all said because it was fun.

Alan is Chess Club's founder and most active member. He loves to share his knowledge and teach others the game of chess. No matter what your skill level, he encourages anyone with an interest in chess or desire to meet new people to come and join.
When: Thursday lunchtimes
Where: James’ Room (Babajen)
