2026 Year 5

5A: Rebekah Antal (Team Leader)

Hello SMPS students and families!

My name is Miss Rebekah, and I will be teaching Grade 5 in 2026. This will be my third year at South Melbourne Primary School, and I am becoming increasingly familiar with our students and community. I am very excited to continue building strong connections with students and their families within the SMPS community. If my first two years at this wonderful school are anything to go by, I know 2026 will be a fantastic year.

I grew up in Ireland with my wonderful parents and my gorgeous dog, Daisy. Before moving to Australia, I worked at my former primary school for four and a half years. It was a special experience to return to the school where I grew up and have the opportunity to teach alongside some of my favourite teachers.

When I’m not teaching, I enjoy exploring new places to walk or run. I love discovering more of this amazing country and take every opportunity to go on an adventure. You might also find me watching a musical at the theatre or sampling some of the many cafés and restaurants around Melbourne.

I am really looking forward to another exciting year at SMPS!

5B: Cathy Prendergast

Hello SMPS Community!

My name is Miss Cathy, and I’m delighted to be returning to SMPS next year. It’s a privilege to work in a school where kindness, respect, and inclusion guide everything we do.

I grew up on a small rural farm in Ireland and began my teaching career in 2012 before moving to Australia in 2019. I’ve taught across all primary year levels, from Prep to Grade 6, and I continue to find great joy in seeing students learn and thrive.

Outside the classroom, I love spending time outdoors, especially swimming and cycling. I’m an enthusiastic traveller who enjoys discovering new places and food.

I’m very much looking forward to getting to know each of you and your families. 

5C: Bec Newman

Hello SMPS students and families,

My name is Miss Bec and I am so excited to be teaching Year 5 in 2026. I have previously taught Year 4 at SMPS, and last year I taught our Environmental Education specialist subject.

I am originally from NSW, and I started my teaching career there before moving to London for a few years and teaching there too. I really like to travel and see new places, and when I lived in London I was lucky enough to visit lots of different countries. In 2020 I moved to Melbourne, and I love it here! I’ve been very lucky to travel around Australia lots while living in Melbourne.

I like to spend my free time being outside, having picnics in the park and going running or swimming. I have lots of plants at my house which I love to look after, including a veggie garden which is currently growing tomatoes, zucchinis and peas.

I’m very much looking forward to having a great year together in 2026!
