Our Science Week kicked off in spectacular style with Miss Shurley’s Monday morning assembly — a thrilling showcase of experiments, energy and explosive fun that had students and staff on the edge of their seats!
From the moment the air cannon fired, sending visible smoke rings soaring across the hall, the excitement was palpable. Students were amazed to see air in motion — a perfect start to a morning full of wonder.
Next came a hands-on demonstration of Bernoulli’s Principle, where three students tried (and struggled!) to fill large bags with air. Miss Shurley then wowed everyone by inflating the same bags with just three breaths! A hilarious tug-of-war followed, with students — and later Mr Cruse and Mr Sturges — unable to break the bag’s seal.
The crowd gasped as a can was crushed using only a tiny amount of water, heat, and a quick dunk in cold water — a dramatic lesson in air pressure!
Students then took turns launching projectiles with the air rocket launcher, sending rockets flying across the hall. The fun continued with a balloon orchestra, where long balloons were released to squeal and spin through the air — one even found a new home in the rafters of Jiloa!
The ping pong ball hover was another hit, starting with a hair dryer and ending with a giant leaf blower suspending a large exercise ball in mid-air — a jaw-dropping moment for all.
Miss Shurley’s tablecloth tug was a masterclass in inertia, as she whipped a cloth from under a set of items with barely a ripple. And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, the grand finale arrived: the toilet paper cannon! With a blast of air and a flurry of flying tissue, the assembly ended in a whirlwind of laughter and mess.
A huge thank you to Miss Shurley for an unforgettable start to Science Week — a celebration of curiosity, creativity and the joy of discovery!
Our Wetland Warriors would love your help! If you have some good, used gumboots stashed away that no longer fit your children (and have no holes!) we would love to hear from you!
Our Warriors are in need of some gumboots of suitable sizing for 7-9 year old children.
Please drop any donations to the front office. Thank you from the Wetland Warriors team.
