Year 1/2 Unit

Hello Year 1/2 families!

Donations

Thank you Year 1/2 families for the donation of a large number of materials over the past fortnight. We are about to begin our inquiry project - designing and creating a toy with a moving part - and appreciate having a range of resources to support this.

Toy Science Incursion

On the 29th May the Year 1/2 students participated in an incursion that explored the science behind everyday toys. The students were highly engaged and enjoyed opportunities to play and experiment with a range of toys. There were even several types that the students had never seen before!

The Year 1/2s investigated the range of forces required to operate toys as well as material choice and how this has changed over time. It was fantastic to see play, discussion, collaboration and persistence all in action.

Literacy - Narrative Writing

The Year 1/2 students have begun a narrative writing unit. We have been exploring the different parts of narratives (beginning, middle and end) and discussed the purpose of each part. We have done a lot of this learning using a mentor text called ‘Naughty Bus’ by Jan and Jerry Oke, which talks about all the adventures a toy bus goes on. We have used this story as a springboard to create our own class version. This bus is going to find itself in some sticky situations around Woodend Primary School! We can’t wait to publish and read the books in our grades.

Toys at School

We understand many students enjoy bringing toys to school to play with during recess and lunchtime. Unfortunately, these valued items have recently caused some friendship issues and, in some cases, have become a distraction and disrupted learning during class time.

To support a positive and focused learning environment, we ask that if students choose to bring toys or special items to school, they remain in their bags during class time and are only used during recess and lunchtime. We also ask that students limit this to just one item, if any at all.  If these items continue to create difficulties between students or become a distraction to learning, students may be asked to keep them at home.
