Year 5/6 - Senior Unit

How fast has this term gone? It is hard to believe we are already in Week 8! The Senior Unit has been as busy as ever, with students continuing to work hard towards achieving their learning goals across all learning areas. It has been wonderful to see the effort, enthusiasm and persistence students are showing in class each day.
In Reading, students have been exploring extreme weather and climate while further developing their comprehension and information report skills. They have been learning to identify factual language, technical vocabulary, main ideas and supporting details within a range of texts. Students have also explored the causes and effects of events such as bushfires, floods and cyclones, and discussed how these events impact people, animals and environments. In addition, students have been investigating the structure and features of information reports, including how to organise information into clear sections using headings and supporting facts.
In Writing, students have been focusing on creating information reports about extreme weather events, including bushfires and other natural disasters. Students have been learning how to include factual language and technical vocabulary in their planning and writing, while also developing clear paragraph ideas supported with detailed information. It has been fantastic to see students building their confidence in writing informative and well-structured reports.
In Mathematics, students have been learning about multiplication and division, with a focus on inverse operations and problem-solving strategies. Students have also been exploring area and perimeter through engaging hands-on activities, including designing and creating their own dream bedrooms and tiny houses. This allowed students to apply their mathematical understanding in a creative and practical way.
In Inquiry, students have been investigating different extreme weather events such as floods, bushfires and cyclones, and exploring how these events impact Australian environments and communities. This learning has helped students build an understanding of how weather events can shape the land and affect the people who live there. Students will soon begin a larger project where they will design and construct a model house or small community that aims to reduce the impacts of an Australian extreme weather event.
