Learning in the Classroom

Unit of Inquiry- Where We Are in Place and Time

On Monday the 25th of May, middle school students had the opportunity to participate in an immersive virtual reality incursion. They explored ancient worlds, experiencing what life was like in Ancient China, Egypt and Greece. Students were able to understand the influence that great thinkers and scientists had on the world, learn about the world’s oldest cultures and how the past still influences our world today. It was an incredible way for our students to experience ancient civilisations in person!

Literacy

Middle School students have been exploring texts related to our current unit of inquiry, including ‘Meet the Ancient Greeks’ by James Davies. They have been reading about the first civilisation and learning about Greek mythology (which they were totally fascinated about). Students have also been reading ‘Ancient Greece and the Olympics’ by Mary Pope Osborne and Natalie Pope Boyce. Using this text, they have been developing their skills to highlight headings, subheadings, images and captions to help them organise information. Students have been learning to record and organise key facts into different categories to assist them in writing information reports.

Maths

Students have been working hard on developing their multiplicative thinking skills. Multiplicative thinking is an important stage in mathematics learning for Years 3 and 4. It helps students move beyond repeated addition and begin to recognise patterns, groups, and relationships between numbers. Through these lessons, they develop skills in multiplication and division, problem-solving, fractions, and understanding how numbers can be compared and organised efficiently. Middle school students have also been practising their times tables to assist them in solving real-life problems efficiently.

Buddies

On Wednesday 27th of May, 4SC and 2EM joined over 2 million children across Australia for National Simultaneous Storytime. This year's selected book was Luna Roo: the Kangaroo Baller, written by Adam Jackson and Adrian Lloyd and illustrated by Jake Minton. Our students were captivated by the story of Luna, a spirited young kangaroo who has to overcome her nerves, face tricky opponents, and trust her teammates to lead her football team, FC Outback, to victory.

The story’s powerful themes of teamwork, self-belief, and pushing through when things get tough sparkled in our classrooms. Following the reading, students participated in a variety of activities, including designing their own team jerseys, discussing their own personal "superpowers" when working in a team, and sharing times they showed grit just like Luna Roo.
