When your kid is a ‘joy to have in class’ and tornado of big feelings at home - After school restraint collapse

As part of our ongoing work through the Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS) initiative, we’re continuing our fortnightly CJC Wellbeing Podcast & Reading Series — sharing practical, evidence-informed resources aligned to the needs identified in our Parent Wellbeing Survey.

📖 This fortnight’s reading: When your child is a ‘joy’ at school but a ‘tornado’ at home

This article explores a really common experience for many families — when children manage the demands of the school day so well, only to release big emotions once they get home.

Often referred to as “after-school restraint collapse,” this is not about poor behaviour, but a sign that children have been working incredibly hard to regulate themselves throughout the day. Home is where they feel safest to let those feelings out.

The article shares some simple, practical strategies to support your child during these moments — focusing on connection, allowing time to decompress, and supporting emotional regulation in a calm and supportive way.

This strongly aligns with the themes coming through our parent data around managing big feelings and supporting emotional wellbeing at home.
