Grade Two

As we move past the halfway point of Term 2 and approach assessment and reporting time, our Grade 2 students continue to work incredibly hard and show great enthusiasm for their learning. We are so proud of the effort, growth and achievements they have demonstrated across all areas of the curriculum so far this term.
In English, students have been exploring narratives through both reading and writing. They have been reading a range of engaging stories and developing deeper thinking skills by making predictions, connections and sharing personal reflections on their “good fit” books. In Writing, students have been busy creating their own imaginative narratives by developing characters, settings, problems and solutions. They have worked through the full writing process, brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing and publishing to create entertaining stories for their peers to enjoy. The students have especially loved turning their writing into published books to share proudly within the classroom.
In Mathematics, the Grade 2 students have explored a wide variety of concepts and hands-on learning experiences. They have collected, graphed and analysed Active April data, identified and grouped 2D shapes, and practised giving directions to help their peers locate objects. Students have also been learning about turns, including quarter, half, three-quarter and full turns. With fractions, they have investigated halves, quarters and eighths in both shapes and collections. More recently, students have been developing their understanding of time by learning to tell the time to the half-hour and quarter-hour using both digital and analogue clocks.
Our Integrated Studies unit this term has focused on the concept of “Change”. Students have been investigating living and non-living things in our environment, including observing live worms here at school. They have also explored animal migration and the reasons why some animals move from place to place. One exciting highlight was an experiment investigating animal adaptations, where students experienced how blubber helps sea animals stay warm in freezing conditions. Many students showed great bravery by placing their hands into icy cold water (with protective layers, of course!) to better understand how animals survive in extreme environments. Students also designed their own deep-sea creatures, complete with unique adaptations to help them survive in the dark ocean depths.
Some highlights for this term so far have been welcoming our wonderful mums, grandmothers or special person's to join us in our classrooms and taking part in National Simultaneous Storytime. The whole school enjoyed listening to the story Luna Roo, and Grade 2 students loved participating in a range of fun follow-up activities inspired by the book. Students also celebrated National Reconciliation Week through a special Art competition, and there was plenty of excitement around the school as some teachers even took on senior students in a friendly soccer match!
We are looking forward to the remainder of the term and all the exciting learning experiences still to come.
