As we move through the midpoint of Term 2, it has been encouraging to see the continued commitment of staff and students to high-quality learning across the College. Throughout the Term, our focus has remained on strengthening instructional coherence and ensuring that classroom practice continues to support student growth, engagement and achievement.
Over recent weeks, staff have engaged in ongoing professional learning and collaborative discussions centred around assessment practices and examination readiness. Through these conversations, teachers have reflected on how assessment data can be used purposefully to identify student learning needs, inform next steps in teaching practice and provide students with meaningful feedback that supports progress.
On Monday, O’Connor Staff were joined by colleagues from our cluster schools; St Mary’s Armidale, St Mary of the Angels Guyra, St Joseph’s Uralla, St Patrick’s Walcha for a staff development day. OCC staff actively engaged in examination readiness workshops as part of our ongoing focus on instructional coherence and supporting student success. These collaborative sessions provided an opportunity for teachers to reflect on current practices, engage in robust professional discussions, and strengthen our collective understanding of what effective examination preparation looks like across the college.
Throughout the workshops, staff explored strategies to ensure that students are not only equipped with content knowledge, but also develop the skills and confidence required to approach assessment and examination situations successfully. Conversations centred around embedding examination-style questions into teaching and learning, explicitly teaching HSC command terms, identifying opportunities for student self and peer assessment, and ensuring students are provided with consistent preparation and feedback practices.
A key strength of these workshops was the willingness of staff to share ideas, experiences and successful practices from across different faculties. This collaborative approach continues to strengthen our shared responsibility in supporting student growth and ensuring that learning experiences remain purposeful and coherent. Thank you to all staff for their engagement, professionalism and commitment to continually refining practice to ensure that our students are prepared, supported and equipped to achieve success.

Across classrooms, there has also been a strong focus on explicit teaching practices, literacy development and the consistent use of learning intentions and success criteria to help students understand what they are learning and how they can achieve success.
These shared approaches continue to strengthen student confidence and provide clarity around learning expectations. As we move towards assessment and examination periods, students are encouraged to actively engage with feedback, establish effective study routines and seek support from their teachers when required. Small, consistent steps in preparation often lead to significant growth and success over time.
Thank you to our staff for their dedication and commitment to creating worthwhile learning experiences, and to our students for the effort and persistence they continue to demonstrate each day.
We look forward to the continued learning and achievements of our students throughout the remainder of the term.
