Grade 5/6 Classroom Update
The senior school have had a busy and engaging few weeks of learning across all curriculum areas, continuing to build their knowledge and skills through a range of meaningful and hands-on learning experiences.
In English, students have been strengthening their comprehension skills by exploring a range of reading strategies, including comparing, connecting and questioning. They have been learning how effective readers make connections between texts, their own experiences and the wider world while asking thoughtful questions to deepen their understanding. Students have also investigated similarities and differences between texts and examined how multimodal texts use written language, images, layout and design features to communicate meaning and influence an audience.
During writing, students have focused on developing more sophisticated sentence structures by learning how to write simple, compound and complex sentences. They have explored how varying sentence types improves the flow and quality of their writing. Students have also expanded their vocabulary by investigating synonyms and antonyms, allowing them to select more precise and engaging language for different writing purposes. In grammar, students have learned how to use parentheses to include additional information, such as explaining acronyms, helping them write with greater clarity and accuracy.
In Mathematics, students have been investigating the metric system by learning to convert units of measurement, including length, mass and capacity. They have practised applying multiplication and division strategies to solve real-world measurement problems and explain the relationships between different metric units. Students have also explored statistics by investigating different data collection methods, with a particular focus on surveys. They discussed how the way data is collected can influence results and learned how to identify variation when analysing survey data.
Throughout our Inquiry unit, students have been developing their understanding of Australia's system of government. They have explored the separation of powers, learning how the legislative, executive and judicial branches work together to ensure fairness and accountability. Students have also investigated how laws are made through Parliament and examined the three levels of government local, state and federal and the different responsibilities each level has in serving the Australian community.
We look forward to seeing them continue to build on these skills and knowledge throughout the remainder of the semester.
Division Cross Country
On the 3rd of June 2026, I went to represent Bittern Primary School in the 12/13 year old Division Cross Country. At 11:20am it was my race. When it was my race, I had to run 3km. It was really difficult because all the other competitors had been training in their squads. When I finished my race, I came in 39th place. - Alana
We would like to congratulate Alana on an outstanding effort as she represented our school with pride. Well done, Alana.
Winter Lightning Prem Soccer
On Thursday the 11th of June some of the senior students went off to Graham Myers’ reserve to represent our school for soccer.
In the morning we all went to the multi-purpose room to get our shin guards, shirts and long socks. After that we all walked up to the big soccer field behind our school, and practiced kicking the ball to each other.
In the first round we had a bye so we got to practice a little more.
For our first game we played against Crib Point and we all did an excellent job including River who scored an excellent goal in the 1st part of the game. The game against Crib Point ended with the even at 1 all.
After all the games the last one was our favorite game because we did an amazing job against Hastings P.S the scores were 3-0.
As we came back to school everyone was having lunch and playing around on the playground. When the bell went for last period of the day, we had free time in the classroom. We were all exhausted and worn out.
A big shout out to Kaden in Year 6 for his amazing goal keeping skills and his amazing persistence.

Police Visit
On Friday the 5th of June Sergeant Matt Anderson came to the school to talk about what he does as a police officer. First, he talked about his equipment then he told us to cover our ears so he could use his police voice.
Everyone had a lot of great questions to ask. After a while he took us to see the police car and we all got to sit in the police car. Everyone kept turning on the siren and we thought the neighbors would get angry so we had to turn it off.
After the sirens Sergeant Anderson tracked our top running speed with his radar. Some of our students were clocked reaching speeds of over 20 kilometers an hour. He then showed us his 2 phones, one was for official police business and the other was for personal use.
Sergent Anderson told us about his career and how he had been squirted in the eyes with pepper spray once from his partner by accident. The best part was that he cuffed Mr. D., Mr. D wasn’t keen at first but then we reassured him that the key was not lost.
