SWPBS Blitz: We Play Safely in the Yard
Our current school-wide focus is We Play Safely in the Yard.
This links closely to our school expectations of Respect, Safety and Learning, and to three key behaviours from our school matrix:
- Play by the rules of the game
- Use our body in an appropriate way
- Ask for help if needed
Teachers will be working through these expectations with students in class, including what safe, fair and inclusive play looks like in the yard. As part of this, classes will also revisit the rules for soccer, football, tag and Gaga Ball, so there is a shared understanding before students head outside.
One important change we are introducing is that, for sport and tag games, the teacher on yard duty will choose the teams. We know that team-picking can sometimes lead to arguments, students feeling left out, or games becoming unfair before they even begin. Having the teacher choose the teams gives everyone a fairer start and helps keep the focus on playing the game safely and respectfully.
We will also be reminding students that if a game is not going well, they can pause, move away, or ask the yard duty teacher for help. Games should be fun, active and safe for everyone involved.
You can support this at home by chatting with your child about what fair play looks like:
- Taking turns
- Including others
- Knowing when to step away
Asking an adult for help.
The same skills we're practising in the playground are the ones that help children navigate friendships, sport and other activities outside school too.
Semester 1 Reports
We will be providing student achievement reports for Semester 1 this year as usual.
The reports will continue to provide important details about student learning attainment, but full descriptive comments will not be included as a result of industrial action taken earlier this term by the Australian Education Union.
The reports will be distributed before our Learning Conversations held on Thursday 25th June where your child's generalist classroom teacher will be able to discuss your child's progress with you.
Bookings for the Learning Conversation will be opened on Compass and a separate message sent to families to alert you to this. If you are uncertain how to make these bookings, our friendly office staff will be able to assist you.
