What's On In Performing Arts

Grade 1/2 students have begun Term 2 by exploring the world of rhythm, and how it can be used to enhance musical works. As part of their learning, students have been creating ostinatos to accompany a familiar Aboriginal song, developing their understanding of repeating rhythmic patterns (and connecting this to their maths learning!). Students have also been experimenting with unconventional musical instruments - cups, discovering the many different sounds they can make through tapping, scraping and striking. They have enjoyed investigating how these unique sounds can be used to add layers of sound to songs they know well. It has been wonderful to see students experimenting confidently, and the delight they show when they or their peers come up with a new way to use these ‘instruments’!

Grade 3/4 students have been continuing their learning of Body Percussion last term, and have been busy composing their own body percussion works. Using a combination of claps, stomps, clicks and other body sounds, students created original symbols and actions to represent their musical ideas. They created compositions using these actions, and learned how musicians record and notate rhythms. It has been fantastic to see students demonstrating creativity, collaboration while exploring the many ways music can be created using only their bodies as the instrument.
