STEM and Bike Education

Over the past four weeks, students in Year 4 have participated in the Bike Education program.  This year, we introduced a STEM topic to our rotations.  Mrs Wright and Miss Temple taught the students to code micro:bits.  Students were then encouraged to step up to the challenge of using their knowledge of coding, Flashing Emojis, a Rock Paper Scissors game and a Magic 8 Ball, along with the different micro:bit sensors to create a safety light for their bike helmets.

Students coded their micro:bits to flash when the light sensor detected low light levels.  Some also added other functions such as playing a melody or performing an action when the accelerometerdetected a shake or movement.

Students then had to figure out how to secure the safety light to their bike helmet and consider environmental factors too.

FUN WITH MEASURING IN 5S!!

In the mathematics curriculum, students in class 5S have been engaged in an exploration of volume, focusing on the measurement of cubic centimetres. Recently, they expanded their understanding by learning about cubic metres and the contexts in which this measurement is more appropriate than cubic centimetres.

To deepen their comprehension of the dimensions of a cubic metre, the students collaboratively constructed a model using newspaper. This hands-on activity required the application of teamwork skills, as they worked together to create a model that was stable and could stand independently.

Their impressive and enjoyable efforts highlight the value of collaborative learning in understanding mathematical concepts.
