SCHOOL LEADERSHIP MESSAGE

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

It was an absolute privilege to celebrate the incredible talents of our South Gippsland students and the hardworking team of music teachers across the SGSMP program who have supported them at the annual SGSMP concert at Mesley Hall on Thursday night.  Here is an excerpt from my speech as Principal of the SGSMP host school.

Music education offers more than just the ability to play an instrument. It nurtures creativity, builds discipline, and strengthens problem-solving skills. When students come together to play in an ensemble, they also learn essential life skills: teamwork, communication, and the ability to work toward a shared goal. Playing music as part of a band requires listening carefully to each other, respecting different roles, and adapting to create harmony. These are the same skills that will help our students succeed in every aspect of their lives.

But more than that, music connects us. It creates bonds that cross schools, towns, and generations. Tonight, as these students performed together, they didn't just make music—they’re building friendships, confidence, and a sense of belonging. To all the students performing tonight: we are so proud of you. Thank you for reminding us of the power of collaboration and the joy music brings to our lives.”

We are so fortunate to have a strong and vibrant music program across the five schools, and it was acknowledged how special our South Gippsland music program is, being an exemplar for the state.

We will gather as a school community on Tuesday evening for the Korumburra SC Annual Presentation Evening. I hope families will join us for a sausage sizzle at 6pm with the presentations commencing at 7pm. This is an important celebration of our students and their achievements throughout the year. The BBQ was well attended last year and was a lovely relaxed way to start the evening, saving families the hassle of trying to prepare dinner before the event. We look forward to seeing you there.

This is our last newsletter for 2024. I look forward to continuing to engage with the school community in 2025, and wish you all a safe and joyous festive season.
