No Social Media for Children Under 16

We’re writing to share an important update about our school’s commitment to supporting the well-being and safety of our students. In line with research and guidance from child development experts, we strongly discourage the use of social media for children under 16.

Here’s why:

Why No Social Media Before 16?

Mental Health Risks Studies have linked early exposure to social media with increased anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Young minds are particularly vulnerable to the pressures of online comparison and cyberbullying.

Sleep Disruption Social media use, especially before bedtime, can interfere with sleep patterns. Poor sleep affects concentration, academic performance, and overall well-being.

Online Safety Concerns Children under 16 may struggle to navigate complex online environments. They are more susceptible to risks like inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and online predators.

Developmental Impact Social media can distract from real-life interactions and experiences that are crucial for emotional and social development.

What Can Parents Do?

Set Clear Boundaries Establish age-appropriate rules around technology use, including no social media accounts before age 16.

Model Healthy Behaviour Show your children how to balance screen time and prioritize face-to-face interactions.

Use Parental Controls Leverage tools that limit access to social media and monitor usage.

Encourage Offline Activities Support hobbies, sports, and other interests that help children build confidence and resilience.

How We Support This at School

Digital Citizenship Education We teach students about the responsible use of technology and the importance of maintaining a healthy online presence.
