Grade 3 and 4

Welcome 2026
The school year for Years 3 and 4 has begun in a really positive way. Our students have settled in beautifully, showing enthusiasm and a great attitude toward learning.
Mrs Beattie, Mrs Misra and Ms M are delighted with the strong start, and there’s a happy, energetic feeling across the classrooms as we begin the year.
We are so excited to welcome all of our Year 3 and 4 students and families to the 2026 school year! Together, we are looking forward to supporting each child as they build confidence, develop new skills, and create happy memories along the way.
Swimming Carnival
What an absolutely amazing day we had at the Aquarena swimming carnival! The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement, smiles were everywhere, and our students showed fantastic spirit both in and out of the pool. The water slide was a clear highlight full of laughter, splashes, and unforgettable moments that made the day extra special. It truly was one of those feel-good days we’ll be talking about for a long time.
English
In English this term, our Year 3 and 4 students are learning to create imaginative, informative and persuasive texts for different purposes and audiences. When writing narratives, students are focusing on developing well-structured stories with a clear beginning, complication and resolution, and using descriptive language to build characters and settings. In persuasive writing, they are learning to clearly state a point of view, organise ideas into structured paragraphs, and use persuasive language features to support their arguments. Students are also strengthening their understanding of grammar, punctuation and sentence structure to create cohesive texts. Alongside this, we are continuing our Spellex program to build spelling knowledge, word patterns and vocabulary. We have also introduced a daily review as part of our English block to help reinforce key skills and connect our learning across reading, writing and spelling.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, our Year 3 and 4 students have been developing strong number knowledge and problem-solving skills. In Year 3, students have been identifying, explaining and using the properties of odd and even numbers, as well as collecting and recording data to answer questions of interest. In Year 4, students have been investigating number sequences involving multiples of 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9, and building fluency by recalling multiplication facts up to 10 × 10 and related division facts. They have been recognising, modelling and ordering numbers to at least 10,000, applying place value to partition and regroup numbers to assist with calculations, and extending their understanding to decimals (tenths and hundredths). Students are also learning to use estimation and rounding to check the reasonableness of their answers, including in real-life financial situations. In Statistics, students have been collecting and representing data using tables, spreadsheets, pictographs and column graphs, then interpreting and discussing their findings. When collecting our own data, we had so much fun tasting “super dooper” flavours before graphing the results — a delicious and engaging way to bring our learning to life!
Inquiry
Students have begun an exciting History inquiry unit exploring the rich diversity and enduring cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. They are learning about the deep connections to Country and Place and how these connections shape daily life, culture and traditions. Students are also investigating the journeys of significant world navigators and explorers up to the late eighteenth century, and considering the impact these voyages had on different societies. As part of this unit, they are exploring the stories of the First Fleet, including why the journey was made, who travelled to Australia, and the different experiences and perspectives following arrival. Throughout their learning, students will reflect on early contact between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and others, such as the Macassans and Europeans, and consider the effects of these interactions. To launch their projects, students have also designed a creative front cover, drawing and using watercolours to paint a First Fleet–style ship to reflect this important period in Australia’s history.
TRP
As part of The Resilience Project, our Year 3 and 4 students have begun the year by exploring the core principles of GEM – Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness. In our first lessons, students learned that practising Gratitude means noticing and appreciating the people and small moments that bring us joy. We then explored Empathy, developing our understanding of how others might be feeling and how we can show kindness and compassion in our daily interactions. Our third focus has been Mindfulness, where students are learning to slow down, pay attention to the present moment and manage busy thoughts and big emotions. Through discussions, shared activities and reflection, students are beginning to build positive habits that support their wellbeing and strengthen our classroom community.
