Welcome to Grade 5/6

A very big, warm welcome to all our new students and families! We hope you had a relaxing break and spent well earned family time together. We are looking forward to a great year of learning, growing and becoming the best selves we can become.

Our students have kicked off the last two weeks learning many new routines and norms and revisted some previously learnt ones too.

The Grade 5/6 students have been practising starting their day with a ten minute 'Do Now'. This mainly consists of independent reading or a small task to help them become settled and have a calm start to their day.

Another new strategy the students have been learning is the word SHAPE. They use this to help them when they are lining up to enter a classroom and moving around the school. It’s important that they line up the right way as it means everyone is standing in a straight line and ready to move together and focus on their learning.

'Sitting in STAR' is also a new expectation that studenets demonstrate when listening to the teacher/speaker. Sitting this way helps the students demonstrate they are listening and keeps them focused on the speaker.

During Maths, students have been using a new Number Fluency to help them practise and learn multiplication number facts to automaticity.

The students have also been revisitng previously learnt strategies to reinforce valuable skills.

They revisited reading, tracking the speaker and working on their voice volume during Paired Fluency, reading with a buddy.

They also recaped the use of the learning response language to help us engage in our lessons. HOVER, CHIN IT, BIN IT and PARK IT are words we use to help us respond to teachers questions during maths and literacy.

Just a reminder - as the weather is very warm this term, could students please bring their hat and a water bottle everyday. They could also have sunscreen applied (or bring it with them) before they come to school. We are a Sunsmart School and love to keep our students safe from the sun in any way we can.
