Week 1 & 2 Updates

Performing Arts

Welcome back to Performing Arts! It’s already been a busy start to the term as students settle into routines, set classroom expectations, explore their individual strengths in Performing Arts, and begin preparing for our upcoming Harmony Day event.

With so many exciting instruments to explore, our Prep students have been learning the expectations of the Performing Arts room. They’ve been singing nursery rhymes with actions alongside the ukulele, experimenting with a variety of instruments, and starting to learn our Harmony Day songs.

Students in Grades 1–6 have been working together to set the expectations and “vibe” for Performing Arts for their own classes. They reflected on the individual strengths they bring to Performing Arts and created character posters of themselves, which will be proudly displayed around the room.

Many students have already shown fantastic energy and effort while learning the songs and dances for our Harmony Day performance. Practice links will be shared soon.

Physical Education

Welcome back to P.E.! We’re so excited to have everyone back and moving again. This term, P.E. will be a fun and positive space where students can enjoy being active, try new skills, and build confidence in their abilities. After time away, our focus will be on easing back into physical activity, making sure everyone feels comfortable, included, and ready to participate.

We’ll be working on rebuilding our fitness through enjoyable games and activities while also developing important skills like collaboration, coordination, and teamwork. Students will have plenty of opportunities to work together, support one another, and practise moving safely and effectively. Most importantly, P.E. will be about having fun, giving things a go, and celebrating effort as we learn and grow together.

District Swimming

If you have a child who is a member of a swimming squad you may wish to nominate them for the Maribyrnong Division Swimming Sports on Tuesday March 10 at Brimbank Aquatic and Wellness Centre, 90 Taylor’s Rd, Keilor Downs. Your child is able to nominate for two individual events. You will need to be able to transport your child to and from the event. Please see Mr Dane for more information.

Interschool Sport

Grade 5/6 students will be participating in Interschool Sport where they get an opportunity to compete against schools in friendly matches, students need to wear their school white polo (If they have it), shorts, runners and bring a filled up water bottle. If you have any questions on that please feel free to contact myself or Vicky at the front office.

STEM

Welcome back to STEM for 2025! This week (and a bit) the students have been introduced to their new STEM teacher for the year and have been practising the routines and expectations during STEM lessons and in the STEM space.

We looked at the the 4 components of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics), explored the texts and resources we have in the STEM room and made a class collage / collection of ideas of all the things that are part of the 'Science' branch.

Students then put their ideas on paper by drawing images and symbols that best represent their favourite things about Science which have been collected and will be displayed around the STEM room.

It was great getting to see some familiar faces and exciting being introduced to some new ones too!

I'm looking forward to an exciting year of STEM!

Welcome back to a new year in Visual Arts!

At Sunshine Heights Primary School, Visual Arts is an important part of helping children grow their creativity, confidence and self-expression. Through art, students explore ideas, learn about different cultures, and develop a strong sense of who they are. As they move through the school, they build new skills, knowledge and creative thinking, supported by a positive growth mindset and a love of learning.

We are very excited to announce this year’s big idea for our Art Show: The Continents of the World.” Students will explore artists, cultures and stories from across the globe while learning new techniques and developing their creative skills. It will be a colourful journey of discovery and imagination.

Families are warmly invited to be part of our art program. If you would like to help in the art room, or if you have ideas, stories or artistic traditions from your culture that you would love to share, please come and see me. We would love our artworks to reflect the rich and diverse cultures of our school community.

We have begun the year by exploring self, families, home and community. Across all year levels, students have been learning different ways to show who they are through their artwork.

Students have settled into the art room routines beautifully, helping to create a calm, safe and creative space where everyone can do their best work. It has been a wonderful start to the year, and we are already seeing so much creativity and enthusiasm in our young artists.

Warm regards,
