Year One Team News

with Anna, Zoe, Edan & Claire

Hello Year One families,

Our term has gotten off to a flying start with our visit to Animal Land last Wednesday. You will have no doubt heard all about the exciting activities we got up to including milking a cow, riding a pony, feeding a range of animals, cuddling bunnies and guinea pigs, and planting a seed! The teachers were incredibly proud of the behaviour of our Willy Kids who showed great responsibility and listening all day. It’s already shaping up to be a fabulous term!

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 3 - 4

Reading: During this term we will be covering stage 7.2 of the Little Learners Love Literacy program. Our focus for week 3 will be the phoneme /er/ represented by the graphemes ‘ir’, ‘ur’ and ‘er’. Our focus for week 4 will be revising what we have learnt so far this term.

Writing: We have started this term by writing exciting narratives. We are almost ready to publish our first story about our scientific discoveries and turn them into our very own book. Later this term we will be focussing on writing recounts. We will learn about using time words to order our writing and remembering the important details including the when, where, who and what of the event we are recounting. This will be supported by Show and Tell where students will take turns to bring home a class ‘pet’ and write a recount of their adventures together and present it to their class.

Numeracy: We will be recognising and classifying 2D shapes and 3D objects using obvious features such as sides, corners and faces.

Inquiry:  Our topic this term is “How and why do we care for animals? How do animals care for us?”. Our excursion to Animal Land last week was a great start to the unit and the students have already started asking a lot of questions around our topic.

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: Our Willy Kids focus for weeks 3 and 4 is “Willy Kids Wonder". We will be using creative thinking to come up with new ways to solve problems. During our Respectful Relationships sessions our topic this term is Personal Strengths. We will be learning to identify and describe personal strengths, explain how these strengths contribute to school and family life, as well as identifying ways to care for others, including ways of making and keeping friends.

Show and Tell

This term, Show and Tell will look a bit different to last term. Each class has a ‘pet’ which will go home for sleepovers! During the two days that students have the pet, they will need to write a recount in the workbook provided of what exciting things they have done together. On the day they return the pet to class, they will present this recount to the class. We please ask that you ensure the pet is returned to school on the designated day to ensure that each student gets a fair chance to take them home. The schedule is as follows:

Take home Monday → return Wednesday

Take home Wednesday → return Friday

Take home Friday → return Monday

Hats

As we head into the winter months it is no longer compulsory for students to wear their hats outside at lunch and recess in term 2 and 3. However, students can continue to wear them if they wish.

Warm regards,
