Prep Team News

with Caitlin, Hayley & Andrea

Hello Prep families,

We hope you all had a lovely Easter break with your families. We are looking forward to an exciting term with new events and incursions to come. The Preps have settled straight back into school, showing they can follow their routines and are ready to learn many new things!

Home Reading Record

The Prep team have enjoyed giving out many 20 nights of reading awards at the start of Term Two, to celebrate all the great reading going on at home. The Prep students have now all brought home their green Take Home Reading Record in their blue book bag. We ask that as part of the daily home reading routine, you record the date and title of the guided reading book that you read with your child each day. This is an important part of our literacy program that helps to consolidate the work we do in class daily. We are looking forward to continuing to celebrate wonderful reading with many awards to come. Please note the ‘Starting School’ book that was used in Term One is now no longer needed, and can be kept at home.

Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea

In honour of our wonderful mums we will be hosting a special afternoon just for them! We would love for all Prep mums to join us in your child’s classroom at 2:45pm on Friday 10th May. The Prep students will be busy in the coming weeks preparing something for the special people in their lives and they are very excited to share it with you all.

We hope you can make it, but we also understand that this might not be possible due to other commitments. If mum is not available at this time, another special person in your child’s life is more than welcome to attend. If someone other than mum will be attending, please let your child’s teacher know. We will also have a special sweet treat for our visitors, so if you have any dietary requirements please pass this information onto your child’s teacher by Monday 6th May.

Finally, our classrooms are quite small as it is and once we add an extra twenty adults it can get very squishy. We will have an activity for the students to do with their special visitor, and if we have too many people this can be hard to organise. For this reason we also ask that, if possible, all younger siblings stay at home. If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s teacher. We are looking forward to a special afternoon!

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 1 - 2

Reading - Students will continue learning about appropriate reading behaviours, including pointing to the words as we read. They will also discuss text features such as full stops and capital letters. As part of our Little Learner’s program, students begin the year learning single letter sounds, with our current focus being the /n/ and /o/ sound. To help us remember these sounds, we have met Nelly the numbat and Oscar the Octopus. There are songs about these characters available online, which you may like to listen to with your child at home or in the car:

Oscar Octopus Song - Spotify

Writing - Students are learning to correctly form letters and use our sound knowledge to write sentences. This week we are focusing on forming the letters ‘n’ and ‘o’. We are also learning to read and write the heart words ‘she’, ‘he’, ‘we’, ‘to’, ‘do’ and ‘was’ this term.

Numeracy - Students are exploring the numbers 11-20. We are looking at making these numbers, matching the numerals to the quantities, comparing the size and recognising these numbers in varied arrangements.

Inquiry - This term, our inquiry topic is Changes Around Us. Our big questions will include: What is change? What things change? What is changing outside?

Homework - Each Monday, students will be given an activity to complete at home that relates to our weekly sound or maths focus. The activity in their ‘Home Learning Book’ will be collected each Friday. Homework in Prep should take no longer than 15 minutes.
