Year Four Team News

with Rebecca, Brittlee, Toni & Matt

Hello Year Four families,

Fortnightly Curriculum Focus

Literacy: In Reading, Year 4 students are looking at conventions within a text through the novel Harry Potter written by JK Rowling. Students have been identifying interesting and useful non phrases, adjectives and adverbial phrases in Harry Potter. Continuing into weeks 3 and 4 students will learn the effects descriptive language has on a reader with the Harry Potter book as well as work on their independent reading goals.

In Writing, we have been working our way through the Writing Process. Students have been using picture prompts from Harry Potter to make a sentence with a noun, verb, subject, object and adjectives. Students have then been encouraged in their writing to embed these sentences or continue with another piece. This helps students understand the importance of word choice in their writing. Continuing into weeks 3 and 4 students will compare narrative texts, highlighting their features and progress into persuasive writing.

Numeracy:  In Numeracy, Year 4 students have started a new unit of Angles and Multiplication. Students have been learning about the different types of angles and using a protractor to read the degrees of these angles. Students have progressed into a unit of Multiplication, learning different strategies to solve multiplicative problems, worded problems and the relationship this has with division. Students have also started Number Sense activities. This is a process where students increase their knowledge of factors through games and are given a goal to work towards in relation to their multiples knowledge. Students are continuing to use online programs such as Essential Assessment, reinforcing skills whilst targeting specific individual goals.

Inquiry: Students have been introduced to a new unit this term. Students will be learning about First Nations and European settlement for the first half of this term. Students will learn about the first European Settlement and the impact this has had on indigenous communities, what life was like for these communities before European settlement and the role of diverse backgrounds have played in the development of various communities.

In Week 3, Monday 29th of April, students will be attending the National Gallery of Victoria as part of this unit.
