Farm Enterprises

Open Day

This years' Open Day run quite smoothly despite the adverse weather!  It was great to see so many people visiting the Farm area and having a chat with our Technical Officers.  Well done to all the staff and students who have been working hard leading up to Friday to get the area ready.  Also, a big congratulations to the students who walked around with pride and spoke to many visitors at their areas on the day.

Year 12s

There are only a handful of Year 12s who have not yet completed their Certificate II in Agriculture but, to their credit, most have put in the effort in the past few weeks to make sure they get it finished by the end of this term.  Obtaining a Cert II in Agriculture shows potential employers that you have the basic knowledge and skills behind a variety of agricultural practices, which can increase your chances of getting a job.

Final weeks

With the Year 12s time with the College drawing to a quick close, please ensure you are still working and behaving as per the College guidelines.  The Farm can be a dangerous place, and we will not tolerate unsafe, irresponsible, rude or disruptive behaviour.  Please adhere to all WHS and animal welfare policies and don't do something that could tarnish your reputation this late in your schooling life.  We are expecting responsible young adults to walk out of these gates.

To the Year 11s, you also need to be continuing with appropriate behaviours. You too must be behaving like young adults and putting safety, animal welfare and respect at the forefront.

(Hopefully) Wise words from an old hand

From speaking with Year 12s in the past couple of weeks, it seems the majority have a clear idea of what they want to do after leaving the College.  This ranges from returning to the family farm, to tertiary study, to apprenticeships, to gap years working around the country.  Some are unsure what they'll do immediately but have a future plan.  All of these plans have been explained with enthusiasm, but also with a touch of anxiety or uncertainty.  We at the College hope we have contributed to your skill and knowledge base so that you are able to succeed in whichever path you choose.

This path may change over time - but you are today who you are meant to be.  Tomorrow you will be who you are meant to be.  You will grow and change over the years, but we hope you can look back at your years at the College fondly and recognise how much you grew over your time here. We also hope we have opened your eyes to the amazing and vast opportunities available within the agricultural sector in this country.

To the parents

Some parents will have older children who have already made the transition from school to adulthood.  Some of you are experiencing this for the first time.  Either way, be supportive, encourage them, celebrate their successes, pick them up when they fall.

Enjoy this time with your kids as they discover that they don't, in fact, know everything!
