Year Four

Dear Year 4 families,
Welcome back to what promises to be an exciting and busy final term of the year! We hope everyone enjoyed a restful break and is ready for a wonderful Term 4.
Students have an action packed term ahead, with highlights including our much anticipated camp to Sovereign Hill, Student Led Conferences, and the always joyful Carols. These experiences provide fantastic opportunities for students to connect, reflect, and celebrate their achievements.
We look forward to working together with families as we make the most of this final term and finish the year on a high note.
Writing
In Writing, Year 4 students have been exploring our Unit of Inquiry, Exploration reshapes civilisations and influences perspectives, through the song I Am Australian. They have analysed and annotated the lyrics to uncover how language reflects identity, culture and shared history. Students created a written piece from the a chosen perspective, channeling a particular point of view and attempting to use an authentic voice to write about the events of The First Fleet.
Reading
In Reading, students have participated in Readers’ Theatre, developing their fluency, expression, and confidence while bringing historical and exploratory texts to life. These experiences have supported students to see how exploration through travel, discovery and storytelling can shape societies and influence the way we understand the world today. Students have also examined how different perspectives are communicated through texts. Using Chris Van Allsburg’s The Wretched Stone, they have engaged with QAR (Question–Answer Relationship) strategies to deepen their comprehension and think critically about the messages within the story.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students in Year 4 have been developing their skills in telling time to the minute, working with both analogue and digital clocks. They have been converting between the two formats to strengthen their understanding of how time is represented in different ways.
Students have also been learning to convert units of time, such as minutes to hours and hours to days and applying this to real-life problems. For example, they have been planning journeys using train timetables around Victoria, calculating travel times and connections to understand how time affects daily schedules.
Through these practical activities, students are building confidence in reading, calculating, and applying time, seeing how it impacts planning, organisation and everyday life.
