Year One

Dear Year One Community,

We’re so excited to kick off our final term together! With warmer weather on the way, Christmas Carols on the horizon, and lots of fun learning in between, it’s sure to be a wonderful finish to the year. We’ve hit the ground running and can’t wait to make the most of every moment with our students!

Reading

In Reading, students are developing their inferencing skills by using picture clues, key text features, and their prior knowledge to make meaning from what they read. These strategies help them organise information, locate key facts, and deepen their understanding of different topics. Students are growing in confidence as readers and enjoying exploring a range of non-fiction texts to discover new and interesting information.

Writing

In Writing, we have been exploring persuasive texts and learning how to share our ideas with convincing reasons. Students have discovered what it means to persuade and how to express their opinions clearly. They’ve enjoyed coming up with strong reasons to support their views and recently wrote persuasive letters to convince others which holiday activity would have been the best choice. It’s been wonderful to see their creativity and growing confidence as persuasive writers!

Maths

In Mathematics, our Year One students are exploring the concept of Length. They are learning to use mathematical language such as longer, shorter, and taller when comparing and ordering objects. Students are using informal units — like blocks, paper clips and counters — to measure classroom items, making estimates before checking their accuracy. Through hands-on activities and discussion, they are developing a strong understanding of measurement and beginning to explain their reasoning using the correct vocabulary.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, we kicked off our Habitat Provocation with an exciting focus on the Ocean, Polar, Desert and Rainforest environments. Students rotated through different classrooms, each transformed into a unique habitat experience where they could watch, listen, and explore fascinating facts about the animals and their key features. They were fully engaged and loved writing and drawing about what they discovered in each environment!

Excursion to Melbourne Zoo

Our visit to the Melbourne Zoo was a wonderful experience! The students had a fantastic time exploring the different animal habitats. We were all very excited to see Noodles, the baby giraffe, as well as the gorillas and lemurs, among many other amazing animals.

The students represented our school beautifully — they were curious, respectful, and principled throughout the day. A big thank you to our parent helpers for your time, support, and enthusiasm. We couldn’t have done it without you!

It was a truly memorable day filled with fun, learning, and plenty of smiles. 🦒🐒🌿
