Message from the Principal

James Penson

SPRING IS IN THE AIR….

The weather is starting to become a little bit warmer (he says optimistically!) and there are lots of signs that Spring has arrived. This is a time of the year that many of us really love and there is light…indeed longer daylight at the end of the tunnel.

This is a reminder for all our students to start wearing their school hats outdoors!

We have all worked hard to get this far this year and with only a couple of weeks of term left we are in the final stretch. There is lots to look forward to including our Year 5 & 6 Earn and Learn market day, Victorian State Schools Spectacular, Student Agency Conferences and of course Footy Day.

THANK YOU PARENT ASSOCIATION FOR A WONDERFUL FATHERS & SPECIAL PERSONS BREAKFAST

Thank you to our wonderful Parent Association for a GREAT morning today. Lots of happy dads, grand-dads and special people were there to enjoy the morning together and this event is just another example of how good it is to be a part of our school community. We rolled in two coffee carts to try and cut down the wait time and can you believe we shipped out 280 bacon & egg rolls!

Events like this do take significant time and organisation. A big shout out to Emma Oliver and Hayley Ormandy and the Parent Association Team for making sure it was such a special and memorable day.

We also wish all our fathers and special persons a fantastic and special day on Sunday.

THANK YOU WORKING BEE LEGENDS

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our Term 3 Working Bee! Your time, energy and hard work made a real difference to our school grounds. Days like this are so important in helping us maintain our yard and gardens, ensuring that our school looks just as beautiful on the outside as it feels on the inside. From weeding garden beds, spreading mulch and tidying up Curiosity Creek, every contribution helps create a welcoming and well-kept environment for our students and families.

I am truly grateful to be part of such an involved, supportive and connected school community. The way our families come together to lend a hand not only lightens the load but also strengthens our amazing Greenhills culture.

NAPLAN NUMERACY RESULTS 2025

Like our previous reading and writing results that we shared last week, we are also pleased with our 2025 NAPLAN Numeracy results. In both Year 3 and Year 5 we have a high percentage of students who achieved results in the “Exceeding” or “Strong” bands. This was 80% in both Year 3 and Year 5. We do note that this is 1% or 2% lower than the percentage for similar schools.

To help our students continue to develop strong maths knowledge and skills we continue to focus on refining our Maths 2.0 curriculum scope and sequence. The key to this is continuing to make sure that all the concepts are covered in a deep and sequential way with real life and authentic connections.

FINANCIAL EDUCATION IN ACTION

Speaking (well writing about!) real life learning, this term our Year 5 & 6 students have been diving into an exciting Earn and Learn inquiry unit. This unit focuses on developing financial literacy skills. Students are experiencing what it’s like to earn an income, developing a business plan, applying for a range of jobs and making choices about how they spend or save their money.

Along the way, they are learning about the value of money, the importance of budgeting, and the role financial decisions play in our everyday lives.

One of the interesting aspects of the unit is that students also have to pay taxes and insurances, just like we do! This real-life element gives them a practical understanding of responsibilities that come with earning money, and sparks great conversations about fairness, needs versus wants, and the systems that help support a community. It has been fantastic to see the enthusiasm and problem-solving skills that our Greenhills students are bringing to this inquiry as they connect their learning to life beyond the classroom. I just wish we had the same tax rate as our students…..it is only 20%!

TRANSITION PROGRAM

Our 2026 Preps have continued to participate in our Experience Greenhills sessions and we look forward to building momentum around our transition and preparation for next year. Thank you to our Prep Team of Abby, Andrea, Suzanne and Jess for their organization and for doing so much to set our current prep students up for success. At this stage we are planning to run 3 x prep classes of 20 or 21 students for next year.
